Yep. What I’m talking about. Haven’t played with the band yet, but purty dern sweet at the homestead. This morning I played her at conversation level, MV and V at like 3:00 - very sweet tube break up even at that low volume. Nice low end. The level control seems to work great. Look forward to the next gig in a few weeks. Tried her through a Z 1-12 with Gold, nice but more midrange. Think I’m sticking with the Z speaker for now. Pretty tweedy, methinks. Pretty usable methinks. Home, studio, live. Keeper, methinks.

Agreed on all points.
I have always thought that level control was sheer genius and one of the most important new amp features of our time.

What exactly is this Level control doing, how does it work - in laymen/non electronical educated verbiage? Does the volume control preamp, master volume control 6V6’s, and level somehow decreases volume after all that? With resistors like the Air Brake? Help a simpleton understand!

I think of the level control as the over all ( master) Volume.
With the regular volume and master dial in your tones, Then the level control , raises or lowers the actual overall volume of that dialed tone.

I rarely change the V and M but do vary the L as needed. FWIW, I set the V at 11 and the M wide open. At the gig, L is usually around noon or less. I did replace the Z speaker with a Neo Lil Texas (Eminence) which is a more efficient (and lighter) speaker. Love this amp!

Ummmm ...... not what I meant. I understand how to use it. My question is how is it accomplishing what it does inside the amp. Already has a Master Volume, which on most amps controls the output from the power section of the amp, allowing us to adjust overall volume (but not running the power tubes hard). This amp has a MV and a level control. What is the Level doing different from a MV? Is it actually allowing us to drive the preamp section hard, and the power section hard, and turning down the volume beyond those 2 sections? And how is it doing that? I don’t believe I t’s doing it with a continuously variable Brake (resistor) type device. How is it accomplishing what it does?
inquiring minds want to know? Doc? Need some insight!

can we have it added to all our amps?

Volume control is the input stage. Master controls the level to the phase inverter. Level is after the phase inverter and controls the level to the power tubes.
This allows control over how hard the phase inverter is driven (like a MAZ MKI master), Z might have used a phase inverter design with some extra gain/drive potential, then added a control to clean it up if desired for added versatility.

can we have it added to all our amps? Unfortunately, it won't work on all Z Amps , I have tried. It is a very cool design and Perry does a nice job of simply explaining its operation. I will try and integrate into other new Z amp designs. Z

I’m new to Dr Z amps and my first amp is a Cure! I’m very happy with my decision. I realize how subjective settings are to player styles, guitar choice, genre(s), venue sizes, etc, but what have you all found to be a good “base tone” setting wise for live playing? I like amps to be on the verge of breaking up but still be fairly clean when picking or playing lightly. It seems to REALLY like my Barber Gain Changer.

I love how I can set my Cure or Jetta up for the tone I want and use the level/master to adjust the overall volume to jam/gig/home settings.
