hello again. im still looking for my first dr z amp. id like to have the cranked sound (the point of breakup) of an z wreck, but i d like to have this sound on much lower volume. i could buy here in germany a z wreck (without half power switch) or an m12. Can bring me the m12 to my way or is the z wreck just my solution. im not sure if an attenuator will change the sound too much if i use it with the z wreck. Dr Z himself suscribed the amp as a mix of a z wreck and a stangray...im confused......please help me out...

From what I remember, I perceived the M12 to be louder than the Z-Wreck (combo) at the point of breakup. Maybe I’m wrong, and someone else can confirm or deny, but that’s what I remember.
I will also say that if what you seek is the sound of a cranked Z-Wreck, then nothing else will do. It’s an awesome amp.
And (others might disagree), I don’t feel that you lose too much with an attenuator (with this amp). A Z Brake Lite, a Powerstation, and (my favorite with the Wreck) the Tone King Iron Man II Mini, all work to tame the Wreck.
I’ve also had luck with using a Celestion Creamback (M65) as well. Helps to bring things down a notch.
Hope that helps!

Not sure the M12 will really get you there if that’s the sound you’re after. But the M12 can be had for a fraction of the price, so you could start there and see if that gets you what your after. The ef86 preamp is just a different color. It’s great but not really a Z wreck. As was said, the M12 is indeed pretty loud by the time you get into the crunch tones.

I'm a little late to this thread, but I perform with the M12 head/cabinet and use the BrakeLite to attenuate it. I keep all three knobs at 6, which has it break up when I hit the strings, but still keeps a relatively clean sound when I strum lighter. For me it's the perfect tone, and stays very quite.
I previously had a Wreck, and it was SIGNIFICANTLY louder. Pretty much unusable for most of the gigs I play.
