I’ve tried a lot of distortion pedals, looking for one that works for me, but have been disappointed within the first 60 seconds of hitting the button on every last one, save the Tim pedal. My biggest beef with all of them is they rob the tone of my Tele, usually by adding way too much midrange and sucking the low end out of my tone. So I don’t use them, and eventually lose money selling them on Reverb. So then, I play my amps cranked to the distortion of my dreams (way cranked), and use the volume knob of the Tele to determine the amount of distortion I want. Plus a Z brake to get the volume down where I can stand it. I’d be happy with a pedal that did what I need even in the “always-on” mode.
I’d pretty given up on distortion pedals. I’ve read about the Z Drive like 30 times over the past couple of years, but always assumed it’d be like the others. Yet this last read somehow convinced me to pull the trigger and give her a whirl. Got her in yesterday, and I’ve now had a chance to play through her at low volume, on a number amps. Wow. Not what I expected. The distortion is oh so smooth, and I think the key for me is that the EQ section is stellar! Each band does just what I’d want. The Treble adds sparkle, the Mid dials out that distortion pedal mid irritation (not that there really is any with this pedal), and the Bass adds or subtracts in the perfect low end. Plus the EQ allows me to shape the tone of some of my old tweeds to get closer to that sweet spot that I love in the Wreck and StangRay if I want! Seems that each amp wants some different settings, but they are quick to dial in. Think I’m gonna love this pedal for home and for live and for recording. Still playing with which side to set as always-on and which to set at “gimme some extra nazz”! I dig ‘em both. Gotta hand it to the Doc, he’s done it again, of course. Never should have been a doubter, never shoulda waited!
Did some A-B’ing with an OCD - nor comparison! OCD has way too much mids! (Prolly be available on Reverb any time now!)
think im in love.
