4x12 cabinets don't work well in a 'small venue'. Their very directional..meaning, they have a 'beam' of louder sound that will blast past your knees and tear the heads off who ever's sitting in front of the band. They're also overkill for a small venue. They are big and heavy and small venues are known for having small stages.
You're approach is a little unusual. Most people pick the amp first, then pick the cab/speakers.
Choosing an amp is SO subjective...it's sort of like asking "What kind of pizza is best". You say Rock Fusion...but do you prefer to have the amp be a clean platform, or do you want lots of overdrive from the amp? What guitars will you be using? ....we need more details.

“small venues are known for having small stages.”
Or small corners under the TV or near the bathrooms.
Plus, you roll into a small venue with a 4x12 and the manager’s gonna have a stroke - even if you’re driving it with a 5 watt amp.

I think we need a common definition of "small venue".

I think we need a common definition of "small venue". This sounds like a Jeff Foxworthy bit: “If they announce a food order pickup over the PA during the second verse of Statesboro Blues, you may be in a small venue.” 😁

Half stacks look so cool but they're so impractical for small venues. Keep the 412 and whatever head your running for bigger shows and get a 112 combo amp for the small venues. Now you just have to decide which 112 combo.... But if you answer some of the questions that have been asked and provide the information someone will be able to recommend a head that would work.

I’m looking for something that will do nice strong and clean mid’s without pedals. I’m a strong midrange guy which I know is unusual. The 100w Engl E656 is looking very attractive since I will be adding another half stack for clean and wet combo. If it’s too big I’m not concerned. Venue? I have a huge back yard for private gigs. Cmon guys, give it your best shot on a Dr Z amp or amps for my 4x12’s.

This is what you want to know. Take your pick based on this post.
And you changed from 'small venue' (presumably indoors)....to two 4x12 1/2 stacks playing outdoors.

a 100w Engl into a 4x12 - the “small venue” for that would be a 2,500 seat theatre.

You know I think it just really depends on the person and what they like hearing and what sound they are trying to achieve. I have enjoyed playing my Mesa Boogie 90 watt combo through 4x12's in my living room. It sounds good and is fun and so it's very inspiring. I don't understand how people can just make blanket statements like "that's too large" or "that's impractical". I regularly take my EZG-50 head and 4x10 cabinet to local jams because I love it. Sure it's more weight and bulk than some would tolerate and I could get by taking my Vox AC-10 tiny combo but I don't mind because I enjoy playing through it so much. And I know people enjoy hearing it because I get compliments.

Oh I love a big fat 50 or 100w amp. The problem is that I love the tone of power tubes being pushed more and you can’t get that at 50 or 100w without pretty intense volume. I’ve been in many bands with guitarists with 100w Marshall’s, and they just can’t push them to the sweet spot without killing everyone.
I agree, though, to each his own.

Wouldn’t an attenuater bring the raw set amplitude (loudness) down without sacrificing the tone you like? You pump it in and get the same product as what went in just more manageable. Then a 4x12 would be good for the tone and good on the ears of listeners. No?

Listen to the whole vid but especially listen to Steve from 6:30 on. He mentions low volume clarity from a 4x12 cab with his E656 hundred watter...

I drove a Marshall 4x12 cabinet with a Galaxie head for a while. It sounded great!
I usually use a 2x10 cabinet and a 1x12 cabinet. But, If we get a big stage gig, I'm taking the 4x12.

Flagrant Faux Pas! oldscooler:Apparent No.1 guitar—'98 Steve Morse signature Musicman. Desired Amp Focus:- Clean with light overdrive, no crunch.
- Nice strong and clean mid’s, without pedals (I’m a strong midrange guy).
Clearly Desired Amp:- The 100w Engl E656 is looking very attractive.
Supporting Video: Further Evidence: Taken from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Morse Amplification[edit] Morse is an endorser of ENGL amps. He has released a signature model, the ENGL E-656 Steve Morse signature amplifier. It is a three channel amp specially designed by Morse with a custom version of the famous ENGL "midrange matrix". In the past he used Peavey 5150 amps with Deep Purple, Marshall Jubilee, Peavey VTM 120 and Ampeg V4. 2Cents:- I may be late to the party but could not sidestep this somewhat unusual post.
- You received excellent, reasonable, tactful, and timely replies to your inquiry.
- Dr. Z’s EMS and Antidote come close, but they both lack “the famous ENGL "midrange matrix".
- Therefore, I do believe that you made your choice even before posting on Z-Talk.
You do realize that this a Dr. Z owners/fans site, right?www.sevenstring.org/threads/engl-amps-owners-thread-d.281269/page-5
