I've always liked the sound of a flanger....not necessarily the "jet swoosh" extreme but more of a "chorus with a little something else" vein.
I have what I think is the best one out there, the MXR 4-knob gray box unit. Problem is....its 40 or so years old and is a/c powered (not a big deal) and most importantly, it's pretty noisy. So much so that I really can't use it live.
I've never had any other flanger sound as good though. I've tried the MXR reissue of my old one, the MXR Micro Flanger and the reissue ADA, as well as the Mooer Elec Lady. I've sold every one of them. Also, I had the Eventide ModFactor and could never get its flanger even close to ol' gray.
So....any recommendations? I'm thinking about maybe a Boss or EHX, neither of which I've tried. Thoughts?

Oddly enough, you might look at the Walrus Julia chorus - it can do the mild flange thing.

I’ve got the MXR Phase 95 - gives you essentially 4 of their classic phasers in one tiny pedal.

Funny you should mention this. I've just been playing around with my TC Mini Vortex flanger because I thought it might be cool on Ghost Riders In the Sky (it is), which is a tune we're hoping to do for our Halloween show this year. It's small, cheap and pretty flexible--everything from light chorus-y phase-y sounds to full on fighter jet, or pretty close. The full sized Vortex has more tweakability, plus the tone-print thing which could probably get you where you want to go. I love the TC stuff--reasonably priced, super flexible, and every pedal of theirs I've tried sounds like it's supposed to. I wish they'd put out a multi-mod-effect pedal--something simple with analog controls. I'd buy three of 'em.

Do you have a Strymon Deco, Lou?

The A/DA PBF ("pedalboard friendly") flanger sold by Analog Man has had me interested for a while. Sadly I do not own one... And really, let's be honest, how much do I need one? But of course, screw that, I need one.

Do you have a Strymon Deco, Lou? Watched a few videos on the Deco just now--it looks pretty cool. Useable/musical in a way that extreme flang effects are not, necessarily. What's your take, Lee?

I'm not sufficiently versed in "what makes a good flanger" for my "take" to be of much value, Jon. However, I use the Deco's flange in a subtle and slow wash for dreamy stuff, or layered in behind a Tube Screamer-type pedal for nasty leads.
I was just thinking Lou had a Deco too, and was wondering why it wasn't scratching the itch...
I do love the Deco, but mostly for the wholesome gain it adds on the other side of the pedal....totally reminds me of overdriving an analog tape machine....very cool pedal...

I've had a Boss for years. I use it mostly to get a nice chorus, but it will go to the jet plane flanger thing if you want. I had a Vortex mini for a while. It did have the ability to tone print like the full sized one. I think there is a Boss model available. I just didn't mess with it since I have the Boss. Got rid of it in a trade. Its advantage is it's small, unlike the Boss.

Do you have a Strymon Deco, Lou? I don't have that one Lee. I did just find a good deal on a Boss BF-3 so maybe that one will do the trick.

I use the old big green box Chroalflange from Fulltone for any flange needs. It does the job well but eats up a lot of real estate. Had a Deco a few years back and it was good. Need to use a favorite switch to really utilize the options IMO.

Loved the Mooer E-Lady for the Andy Summers / Gilmour Electric Mistress thing. Great little pedal.

I used my Vortex mini for a couple of things at our low-volume gig on Saturday, and noticed a pretty distinct volume drop when it was engaged. Not sure if this is because the effect cuts the mids a good bit, or what, but I'm curious if this is unique to the Vortex or something that is generally an issue with flangers.

I have a Vortex (full size) coming. The Boss didn't quite cut it for me so it'll go back up for sale soon. I'll report back on the Vortex.

Gigged the Vortex tonight. It's the one I'm keeping. It has the smooth sweep I was looking for and sounds great right outa the box. I may play with a few Toneprints in the future.

I didn't experience any volume drop tonight with my Vortex Jon. I have the full size version.....not sure if that makes a difference.
