Just picked up the new Gain Changer SR in Olive Grey. Will be here later this week. Seems like the original GC gets a lot of love on here. Have been wanting one for a while, and just freed up some funds to get one. I was leaning more toward the original (non-SR voicing) but sadly, the used market is pretty inflated right now. Selling for the same price as the new SR models on Reverb.
I've read a few threads on other sites comparing the original vs SR. Any Z guys here have any experience with both?

I've got one. It's great, awesome.. everything that one might expect. But of course, I've been a self-admitted Barber fan-boy for a long time now. My first Barber overdrive experience was with the LTD SR (the early/original genesis of the Gain Changer SR) and I was hooked immediately. I've then bought and owned the standard LTD, several Direct Drive versions, Gain Changer (reg & SR), Burn Unit/Super Sport--just TONS of 'em. I happen to think that Mr. Barber handles overdrives as good as anybody--and in particular, he knows how to manage a clear low-end with any level of overdrive.
The difference between the original Gain Changer vs. the SR edition is exactly the same as the original LTD versus the LTD-SR. That is, the SR is slightly more neutral in the mids (not as much mid-push or mid-hump) and really about as "transparent" of an overdrive as can be made. (The standard LTD and GC have just a touch of "honk" to tell you that there's a little bit if mid-push there.) I do like the standard LTD and standard Gain Changer, and would use them if there were no SR versions; but the SR versions (for me) are just unbelievably neutral & versatile. Still love the tone, years after starting with them.

Well...I unintentionally picked up two Gain Changers this week on Reverb. The old V1 in surf green, and a new SR in black. Don't think these are released just yet, although they did a limited run of these a while back in black on the older voicing. Had a bit of an issue with MusicToyz but the owner made it right by sending me a black one at no extra charge. So lucky me...will have both on me very soon to A/B and see which is better for me

(The standard LTD and GC have just a touch of "honk" to tell you that there's a little bit if mid-push there.) After fooling around with this for a little while, Mark, your description seems to be dead on. The original has a touch of that klon vibe going on in the upper mids. Obviously not as drastic, and still very neutral sounding pedal, but the SR definitely wins out in the transparency category. In fact, with some tone knob adjustments, the SR win the mid push mode sounds pretty close to the original in Flat+Fat mode, to my ear. I actually prefer the tone of the original a tad more. I love me some mids. Anything truly transparent tends to sound a little hollow/anemic to me....BUT....with my Klone and KOT, I have plenty of options for that transparent with midrange push sound. I really don't have a truly transparent pedal, so I think I will keep the SR. It seems to have a more open clarity in the mid range. All in all, both great pedals. I'd keep them both if I could, but one will do for now. There are many more pedals to be had on my list
