Funny you all are bring up the Z 28. I have been working on an updated version a Z -28 MKII. Post Phase Inverter Master Volume, Metro Amps Zero Loss E/F loop, fitted with all rich sounding Jupiter Vintage Coupling Caps, adjusted the circuit for a more balanced response, a touch less low end. I have fitted it in a 2X10 combo cab and love the big full almost 2x12 combo sound.
Z Oh man, oh man, oh man ..... there goes my current acquisition plan ....... I am intrigued to say the least about a PPIMV .... and the circuit adjustment ...... and for sure I dig the fact you're talkin' 2X10 Yes, I love my Z-28 thru my 112 and 210 mini-stack ..... but what you're talking here just makes smile like a mad-man ..... Thanks for the update and cheers always, Joel

Doc, does the mod effect the amps mid character? No the Z 28 MKII is still MID centric . The change is to the low end frequency response , it lessens the low end contribution. The MKII is now much more balanced top to bottom .

The Z 28 has always been my favorite amp, glad to bring it back after 18 months hiatus. I'm preparing for the Sweetwater gear fest June 21st. So it won't be till after that , mid to late summer I would guess. I will let you all know when to request RA forms.

I’ll be putting my name on the list as well. The z28 is my desert island amp so anything I can do to improve it I’m all in for. This news has me REALLY excited!

Yep! I'm guessing a ballpark price for the upgrade would be about the same as the Maz MkII stuff? ? Need to start saving.... I’ll be putting my name on the list as well. The z28 is my desert island amp so anything I can do to improve it I’m all in for. This news has me REALLY excited!

I’m not sure, it may be slightly less. I was speaking to another member who mentioned the lack of reverb, effects loop, and less knobs of the z28 may mean less components and or a less complicated upgrade. By the same token Doc can’t be upgrading these for free so if it is the same, I still feel it’s worth it.

Tried the Z Master Alnico's and didn't really like it with the 6V6 based Z 28. I put in my big magnet Z 10's and amp sounded HUGE . I know a a few guys bought the original Z 28 as a 2X10 and raved about it, maybe they can speak up. Read more: ztalk.proboards.com/thread/82341/scored-28?page=1#ixzz5q4S9SRlhDoc- I loved the 2/10 format '28. Only gripe was the weight. Any chance you're using the lighter cab w the dual tens or possibly neo-tens to lower the curb weight? The tweaks sound great and I'm eager to hear the amp. I'd love a studio combo of this w a single twelve though, as much as the 2/10 mainly for grab and go convenience. We can always add an extension cab.

I love 2x10's with my Z-28, but it is a separate pine cab with alnico speakers(Eminence Legends.) This works so well for me, love the sound.
Master Volume and FX loop!!! Might need to change my future amp plans!! MKII madness starting to set in!!
I am sure my wife will be happy to hear this ;-)

With the Z-28 2x10 combo already my #1 amp I'm excited to hear the MKII version is on deck for later this year! I contemplated buying another one for backup when I originally heard about the discontinuation but am glad I waited so I can now check out the MKII. Love the idea of a master volume being added! Like some others on this thread, don't think I'd ever use an effects loop. How about a mids control knob? Dial some mids out for an even closer "California" vibe or add even more if that's what you need. The current weight of my 2x10 combo is about my max for gigging so anything that can be done to shave a few pounds off would be great as well. Can't wait to hear the MKII!

My only gripe ever about the Z-28 was no MV. I don't need the FX loop either. Sign me up up for one.

Doc, just had a thought...if u add a harmonic trem to this amp, it might break the internet.

Well that's good because the MKII is built on a larger chassis to facilitate the added E/F loop board. So it can't completely be an upgraded mod. I'll see what I can do about an upgrade and what I can offer. Possibly the tone tweaks, the Jupiter cap upgrades, and the added dual ganged Master Volume on the back panel. I'm still working on the release. My question to you all is what about a 2X10 combo release, I know a 2X10 can be a tough sell to some, but the sound is quite amazing and a nice change from a 1X12 combo. I really don't think Fender guys will mind, as the Z -28 is very American voiced amp, likened to a Brown Era Deluxe, and a 2x10 is a very sacred Fender combo configuration. A bigger defused sound than a focused 1X12 , the weight is nearly the same, the foot print on stage is the same, but the sound is fuller and thicker, like a 2x12. Z Sounds like it makes sense to me Doc. By any chance are you going to use those same alncio speakers as in the Z-Master? Or are you going to go the 2/10 greenback? Just curious as to the speakers you plan on using. Thanks.. A master volume or even power scaling/ half power would be a really nice feature. I like the simplicity of the Z 28 so the effects loop doesn't matter to me. As for the caps or tone tweaks.. I don't know.. I think the 28 sounds great as-is. Just gets too loud too quickly.

I have a 2003 Z28 210 combo and it’s one of my favourites for sure. I like the Z-10 speakers but recently swapped out the Z-10’s in my Maz18 combo with a Greenback10 and a Crreamback10. This combo is fantastic. Much lower volume then the Z speakers and more chime. I would imagine a similar combo or even just a pair of Greenback10’s would be fantastic with the Z28 as well.

My only complaint and its not really a complaint just a preference, is that its not Cathode Biased. I like to be able to swap tubes out at will and replace them if they go out without having to bias.
Other than that I will get another one, still waiting for my refund. Every Z guy needs a Z28 and a Ghia.

In general, I also prefer cathode bias amps from a convenience/tube rolling standpoint. But it's my understanding that fixed vs cathode yield different sounds/tonality. Fixed amps being tighter and more stout. The Z28 is both of those! DrZ makes amps both ways, based on the sound he wants out of it.
