Do I need to have a cheap 1073 clone or are the various plugin options enough or better? I'm trying to talk myself out of it and I need support. or justification . Is there some kind of vision that I'm trying to achieve? no. can i get usable tracks now? sure. just trying to learn and grow. If it's worth having one, do you have a recommendation? GAP Pre-73 Premier, BLA B173, WA73, other? I have no experience with these and my only choice is to start buying and eliminating. I really don't want to go over $600 and I'm fine with used gear. I'm working on my low end rig to do some remote collaboration and tracking. here's a little rundown: - doing tracks for mostly rock leaning Americana artists/buddies
- My room is treated with rockwool panels. tests/sounds okay
- Tele with various pickups into MAZ18 NR 210 combo or 212 closed cab
- Mics for guitar are usually SM7B, SM57, Fatheads
- Focusrite Clarett 8Pre USB interface with Octopre dynamic (for drums)

If you could find a deal on a used one the WA73EQ would probably be a nice addition to your setup. My guess is you'd probably end up using it exclusively for all the overdubs you do. I don't personally own any Warm Audio gear but a couple of my friends do and they have had nothing but good things to say about the stuff.

For what clipalator is worth, compared to my other options, that's worth the difference. Man, if i go without the EQ, i could maybe swing a 2 channel version. love/hate gear shopping
edit: it has an insert with bypass that's pretty cool. could leave one of my old FMR RNC in there for vocals and stuff

Just get that one and plan on getting another one. You've cracked the seal. It'll get worse before it gets better.

No.2 on the way. Go Big or Go Home. (aka. don't make an offer on two items before one offer expires)

Did you get this stuff yet? I got one. haven't spent any time but i had to record some acoustic really quick. easy with the Hi Pass and a little eq with real knobs. It just works. I am very pleased.

FYI: (somewhat jaded response) mic placement and volume are more important than the most boutique of mic and preamps. If you spend time with mic and pre shootouts on VK, ZenPro or Sweetwater, there isn’t all that much difference between the used Neve clone and the ones that claim heritage from the first unicorn’s kidney. A used WA in good shape should be great if the mic is in a good place, the room isn’t reflecting hard and the volume is appropriate- assuming the guitar is well played.
I love vintage and cool gear, it just makes a lot less difference than the sound it tries to capture.

I'll preface this by saying that I don't know what I'm doing and not a recording engineer by any stretch of the imagination. What I can say is that I feel these preamps allow me to lay down a track with no processing that I feel okay about. That I'm fine with sending to someone to mix without explanation.
