Embarrassing as it may seem (an embarrassingly common thread in my posts of late), I’m just beginning to learn about the differences in speaker tones after 55 years of picking. I’ve never been one to swap speakers out, I just left the ones in the rigs as I receive them and figured that’s the sound of this amp. Never thought much about altering that sound. Part of it is that I’ve been too lazy to do a lot of speaker swapping. That and lack of time has always been an element in my life.
So I am on this learning curve now, made all too clear with this last comparison of this and that cabinet, and my eureka moment came today. Here’s how it went. I got in this new (to me) Stang Ray combo with a C gold. Stunning tone and clarity. So I go back and forth and compare it to the Wreck through the Wreck cab and they are very different, and the Wreck seems quite a bit mushy and not nearly as defined to me, and I dig the Stang Ray quite a bit more (and we all know what a transient and dynamic thang that is with our amps!), and that is saying something because I’ve LOVED the Wreck since it first came out. Also, I tried the Wreck through my old favorite Matchless cab which is a G12H30 and a Greenback and it sounded worse than the Wreck cab - no surprise as Doc chose the Wreck cab specifically for that head. Sooooo......... today I disconnect the blue Celestion in the Wreck cab and play just through the one 12 Gold (@ 8 ohms) and VOILA - its as clear and unmuddied and tight as the Stang Ray! I couldn’t believe my ears! I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!! I could not have imagined the difference in clarity and tightness. In fact I could dial it to sound quite similar to the StangRay! Why is the single 12 so much more distinct than the 2-12???!!!!!
So.... I want to hear any and all of your thoughts and caveats on the subject as I try to figure out how to convert all my rigs to one 12” Gold cause this is the most stunning discovery and I can’t wait to heat what any and all of my favorite amps sound like through that cab. I am amazed it’s taken me over 50 years of playing to glob on to what you guys have been saying forever, that SPEAKER CHOICE MAKES A DIFFERENCE!
I’ve been an idiot, but have seen the light. Further enlighten me, please!
