Here’s a long winded question that I’m sure has been covered here before, but I’m asking anyway.
I know a lot of you guys or pretty hip to speakers, more hip than me! I have a number of cabinets: Z Wreck with blue and gold celestions, a Z cab with 2 12”blues, a single 12” Vintage 30 and a single 12” G12H30, and a Z Best and a Matchless with their “modified” G12H30/Greenback.
They all sound good, but the Matchless is my absolute fave, for studio and live. Best overall tone and low end, really well rounded. Not sure just what they do to their Celestions to “modify” them.
When I look at the manufacturer’s frequency response curves on speaker, they all look just about the same to me, so that’s been of little help.
I have an original 1957 Fender Deluxe which is a classic sound and really rocks, but I find it too heavy in the midrange and not enough low end nor enough high end sparkle. Would be a perfect size grab and go gig amp if I could get the tone I love out of it. I recently pulled the original Jensen out (heresy!) and put a Celestion blue in there - wow, what a difference!!!!! Way thicker and quite a bit louder. But it still isn’t as rounded as I’d like. Still too much midrange and not quite enough low end/high sparkle.
Any suggestions on a speaker that will give me more lows and highs without bringing up the mids, creating a more balanced tone? Would a G12H30 do the trick? What say you?
BTW I have a wide panel twin (‘53) that is my fave tweed amp with which I’d like to try swapping speakers for a fuller tone also - 2 12’s. ? Should I do the Matchless combination of G12H30 and a green back? Other suggestions?
i just got a 1-12 Stang Ray combo with a Celestion gold which is a very well rounded sounding amp, but I’m thinking that’s the inherent nature of the StangRay shine through a great speaker. Not sure if the Deluxe or Twin would do the same with Golds!
Thanks in advance.
