Ok, I blame Maddog for the start of my Collings electric obsession.
Ever since it was introduced in 2017, I have had a somewhat healthy obsession with this model. I love my ES-335, and had been looking at ES-330s, but every time I played a Gibson it left me a bit disappointed. I loved how they looked, felt...but then the sound would be lacking. Or similar issues. When the I30 came out I knew I was in trouble.... :)
I have played three of these - and they all had the feel and tone that I have come to expect with Collings. With the sale of recent things around the house (guitars, amps, a mountain bike) and some gig money in my account, I started to get a bit serious about buying one. I really focused on looking for a used on to save some $$ - and here she is:
Must say I never even had the color crimson on my mind - but once I saw it, I knew it was the right one for me. It has the lollar p90s. It weights 5lbs 7oz. It is resonant, beautiful, and makes me want to play guitar all day.
Here's the current collection: L to R: 2014 SoCo with throbaks, 2009 290 with Lollars (overwind in bridge), 2013 SoCo 16LC with TV Jones, 2018 I-30LC with Lollars
"Although the ES-330 and Casino have a reputation for indie jangle and Britpop crunch, the I-30 feels like a smooth soloist’s guitar – certainly more Grant Green than Paul Weller. Into a clean tweed amp with a splash of spring reverb, the scope for expression offered by the Lollar Dogear P-90s is broad. Crank up the amp for some throaty overdrive and there’s no shortage of girth – the I-30 delivers fat, raunchy P-90 tones that are thick like molasses. It’s more Grissom than Lennon, more Texas than Abbey Road Studio Two."

Yes, a lot of money in these guitars and it is an odd feeling for me. But music is my passion, my hobby, and such a big part of my life. Each guitar has been bought and paid for by working music gigs (playing or running sound) or by selling other stuff. All cash deals, all used stuff at reasonable prices for the quality of the instruments.
Maybe this is just rationalization, but I know plenty of musicians putting gear on credit cards and ranking up the debt. That's not for me. I am blessed to be able to have these for the time being, and I don't expect them to all stay forever but let's just say right now I am a very happy guitar player.

Beautiful instruments! I've been looking at the I30 as well - like the way it looks and sounds.

Congrats on the I-30LC.....and the rest of the “gang”. I love mine too.

Another thing about this model is the pickguard is a standard feature. I added one on my I-35LC and my SoCo 16LC. What do you think?

It's funny - I didn't really give it much thought (I am not too picky about such things) and if you had asked me if my SoCos had pickguards I would have to think about it. Seeing them lined up now (with and without) I don't have a feeling either way. I will say I have noticed the one on the I30 when playing - the guitar is so acoustic that if you hit the pick guard it is noticable, but the sound it dulled a bit as they use a rubber spacer to lift it to height. I am going to leave it on, but don't plan on adding to the SoCos.

I rest my pinky down so havining a pickguard makes it more comfortable and natural for me. And I personally like the looks of pickguards on mine...and 335 types and Les Paul types. 😎 Rock On!~

Really nice guitars, Sean! You've got an amazing collection. I am also a big fan of Collings guitars and I had a hard time letting my 290 go. But my I35-LC is a excellent consolation, even if the I30-LC (black or plain walnut) is really appealing to me! Enjoy!
