Tube circuits are mystical beasts to me. Is the V1 the primary "tone generator" in the preamp? Thinking about experimenting with different preamp tubes in the EMS. The Tube Store has several to choose from and a couple sound interesting.

Do it. Let us know the results.
V1 in any amp is where things start shaping. Will usually get the most change with rolling tubes in V1.

Purchased a matched set of Mullard reissue CV4004 tubes. Installed. Subtle difference in tone as expected, but it did help smooth things out a tad.

The phase inverter Pre-amp tube is an important tube for power/aggressiveness and headroom.
Personally I would look for an aggressive tube for that spot, but maybe you are toning down?

Yes.. just a tick though. I think it's really close. Sounds great in standard tuning or Drop-D, but gets a bit hard edged in the mids when in Drop-C. Might swap out one of the speakers for something with a laid back midrange. The Celestion guru suggested their "A Type"... a Swamp Thang or 12L might also do the trick. So, I've got the old V1 and V2 handy. Maybe try one of those in V3? See what happens? If memory serves, one is a Chinese 12AX7 and the other is a JJ ECC83. I didn't uncap the current V3 to see what it was.

I didn't uncap the current V3 to see what it was. I wasn't exactly referring to a guitar tuning. I was referring to how hot you wanted the amp. If it is too hot you can play with something like an AT7 or an AY7 I believe, to soften up the amp. You probably have a 12AX7 in V3 so you may not see or hear a difference if you are looking for more aggressiveness.

Ended up putting the original tubes back in. Also tried a speaker swap and went back to the originals there as well. Tire kicking attenuators now. Good luck finding Frank.
