Considering getting an Avatar Alnico to put in my Maz 18 NR 112. How much of a difference will I get with the alnico? Has anyone specifically used an Avatar? I had a cab with one of their broken in V30's a while back and it sounded great, but that wasn't a speaker they made.
I would also value your thoughts on if I do go this route is there any pro's or con's on going with a 25 or 50 watt?

I know this is late, but the Avatar a25 is a great speaker. It is a great bang for your buck new or used. It may not be the best speaker I have ever used on an amp, but it seems to work really well with any amp I use it with...

I'll pipe up with the late crowd...I tried a 12" Gold in my MAZ 18NR MK2 and it was very nice, but I put the G12H30 back in and I'm liking it better. I like the way the ceramic magnet's immediacy and punch let the amp's character shine through. They've both got benefits but right now I'm digging the ceramic over the alnico. Of course, that could change in a week or two .

I'm using a Celestion Blue in mine and absolutely LOVE it! Most Alnico speakers seem to have slightly more bite/top end and compress just a little more.
Played through a Gold (my Stingray cab) last weekend. Liked it too, but the blue is more broke in and slightly warmer.

You never know until you try em alright...tried scumback m75 in mrk I/reverb and was nice but had too much sizzle or something...put the et-65 back in and was way more relaxed, notes had heft to my liking...the ruby is in my mrk II for a good while, wont say forever...went with new gold in 110 ghia again...man that thing needs some workin out...but still digging the Ruby for sho.

I dropped a new Celestion Ruby (35w Alnico) into my MAZ 18 about 2 months ago ... I really do like it now that it is breaking in. Really good balance, Alnico compressed highs, etc. The original Celestion G12H was good, but this speaker is an improvement in my honest opinion.

I trust Dave. I haven't worked with him since he started the Avatar branded speaker line, but did a whole lot of horse dealing with him. He will be the first stop when I make the next cab.

I had an Avatar cab a while back and that it was great. It had a Greenback copy, not one of theirs. I came across Hempopotimus Speakers on Reverb. Looks like the take vintage speakers and rebuild them to vintage speaks with new parts. I got a 30w Alnico with a big cap on it. I’ve been running down a couple other issues and tomorrow will decide if it is a clear winner or not. I think the G12H that came in it pretty well. I also have a Mojotone 25w Greenback that sounds nice too.

I’m liking this Hempopotamus place! He’s heavy duty and very reasonably priced. Gonna try the Rock Ness Hempo at some point.

I bought my 18 used a couple of months ago and it has the Hellatone 30, which is the Celestion G12H. It's very punchy and balanced. I don't have anything to compare it to but it sounds good to me.

I did a search on the forum and they were getting some love a few years back. Also, he has 1,000 reviews on Reverb. I found him to be really nice, I've been doing a shoot out all morning with the Alnico, a Greenback, and the G12H. Both the Alnico and the Greenback were clearly much smoother. I'm keeping the Hempopotamus in the Maz, sounds glorious. So in my one interaction I say product and service are both very good.
