Mine seems to have developed this hissing frying pan type noise all the time and disappears when its on standby. Does it without any guitars or pedals connected. If its not tubes then I will be lost. I dont have any extra power tubes around but do have quite a few 12ax7s around. Sounds great still but the noise is fairly loud and annoying. Any insights?

I think your initial intuition about one of the tubes being the culprit is spot on. Work your way through the preamp tubes with your 12ax7s (until the reverb tube, of course), and see if that helps. Does the hissing noise change when you manipulate the reverb knob at all? Good luck!

You can also use the 12AX7 in place of the 12AT7 without any problems to test it. If you like the sound with it in, you can leave it in. It won't hurt anything. I use a 12AX in place of the 12AT in my Maz reverb all the time.

Maybe a dumb question, but, can i remove one power tube at a time to see if a particular tube is a culprit? I dont have an extra to swap presently. Is it harmful to the amp?

Don't remove any of the power tubes and then operate the amp!! That will hurt the power tubes and possibly the amp. You won't find the culprit that way in the preamp section as you will get no signal to diagnose your problem. You'll need an extra preamp tube to use for diagnostics. It sounds like a power tube has failed - watch for sparks, arcing, and redplating when powering up.

Good answer above. I had the same sounds with my ZLux...a new set of power tubes fixed it.

Update, all is well in Z land. New tubes are quiet and sound great. On a side note, i recently acquired a Lovepedal Elephant man pedal. Its Seans take on the mu-amp circuit, like a analogman bad bob boost. Man it sounds awesome thru the z -lux all by itself with a strat. More fat and more chime at the same time. Those SRV rakes and slides on the low E are irresistible!
