Like which part(s) within the amp differentiate whether it uses 6L6 or EL34's? Not necessarily those specifically, but it seems like most amps are generally the same as far as components, most amps use 12ax7 preamp tubes, so what parts ARE different that cause the need for different power tubes?
SECOND QUESTION: Which types of tubes are interchangeable? I can't think of specific ones but I know that some types of power tubes are interchangeable, like 6L6 and KT66 for example.

1st question. The transformers. The power transformer will mainly determine what the plate voltage will be and that the tubes operate properly within their required range. The output transformer mates the tubes to the speaker, insuring the tubes drive the proper load. 2nd question. Rather than answer that I'm going to suggest you get a good book on tube guitar amps. Start with "The Tube Amp Book" by Aspen Pittman. You can also download this substitution manual: www.smcelectronics.com/DOWNLOADS/TUBE%20SUB%201980.PDFThere are also close Russian equivalents for the EL84 that are popular. That can get confusing because what looks like an "n" in the Russian alphabet translates to a "p" in English. So a 6n14n labeled tube might also be referred to as a 6p14p. Also you will find 6n14n tubes with different suffixes. It is best, in my opinion, to buy Russian tubes from a reliable source and ask them if they are compatible with the amp you intend to use them in.
