I have and love my Z28; it's not going anywhere. Has the Z Brake Lite and a 65 watt Scumback H75. After 18 months of gigging it, I've found I ALWAYS use the Brake Lite, generally on 2 clicks. And I have a '66 Super Reverb that while incredible, I NEVER use. Thinking of selling it and getting a Cure. Who has played both side by side and can compare the two?

I had the cure and the Z-28 The Z-28 was more to my liking nothing against the Cure but I didn't like the midrange on the cure.

I am just the opposite Randy. I did not care for the mid range on the z-28. The z-28 is a great amp, but the cure is more to my liking. Really like the level control knob. We all hear things differently. The cure takes pedals very well and is easy to dial in. Both amps can get loud, but if I remember right, the z-28 would have more headroom than the cure. My 2cents worth.

Love them both--wish I still had my Z-28. That said--the 28 is a pretty mid-focused amp with limited EQ-ing options where mids are concerned. It has sweet upper mids and plenty of cajonnies on the low end. It's the epitome of a set it and forget it amp. Takes pedals very well. Its mid-voicing means it sits in a very sweet spot in the mix. On the downside, It's loud, and to get the best out of it you'll probably need an attenuator for most gigs. It's not cathode-biased, so every power tube change will likely require re-biasing. It's increasingly hard to find good quality EF-86 tubes, which is the V1 preamp tube for the 28.
The Cure has a much more conventional tone stack, allowing you to dial the mids in or out as you wish. The cure also has an excellent master volume control and a level control that's kind of magical--you can dial in your M and MV to get your base tone, then adjust the level to the appropriate volume without having to touch the V or MV. A stroke of genius, that. The Cure is a lot like a half-powered Z-Lux without the reverb and tremolo channels--very similar tone and feel. I'm told that the Z-28 has more in common with the brown-face Deluxe, but I've never played the latter so I'll have to take their word for it.
I think, given the choice right now, I'd go with the Cure. Both sound great, but the Cure's a bit more versatile and maintenance is a good bit simpler. Also, that level control should really be on every amp on the planet--but it's not. It's unique to the Cure at the moment, and along with the great Z-Lux DNA, that level control really makes the Cure a special amp.

My 2cents worth. No problem bro. I just didn't really bond with the cure at all. I did like the Z-28 for its Fender/Marshall vibe. The cure is def more versatile and they both do take pedals very well. The Z-28 was darker sounding but in a good way.

My thoughts are the Z-28 has a more 'lower' focused midrange than upper. The dynamics of the Z-28 (due to that ef86 tube) are incredible. But the tone stack, and it's relationship to overdrive may not be for everyone. (Remember, as you turn the bass and treble knobs up (or down), they add overdrive (or take away) as well as eq) The Z-28 may not have as wide a tonal range as other amps, but what it does, it does VERY well. Once you get a taste of the dynamics available just by altering your fingers and pick...it can be addictive.
The Cure will be more of a 'traditional' type amp. But the tone and dynamics will be considerably different than the '28.

I have played a brown-face Deluxe and the Z-28 is close but with more muscle. I do find the Z-28 is very sensitive to picking dynamics. I would like to play the Cure. Haven’t seen one in person.
