Anyone heard of any plans for a Z-Plus head version?

I don't think that there are any immediate plans for a head version. If I recall, even though Doc currently has a couple amp heads with reverb, it can get finnicky when trying to place a reverb tank in a small head and eliminate noise. So, Doc tends to shy away from them these days. Never say never, though

Anyone heard of any plans for a Z-Plus head version? The best way to deal with this is to have a new head cabinet made by Mather or similar. I scored on such a gem yesterday from Steve Z. Look at the thread from yesterday regarding a Head Shell for sale. The Mather cabinet will cost $230 shipped. Just so you understand the tricks, Dr. Z uses a reversible faceplate on the Maz series, you can flip the chassis over and put it into a head cabinet, but you have to reverse the faceplates. They chose not to have reversible faceplates on the Cure and Z-Plus and just sell them as combo's. The cabinet that I scored on yesterday is the best way to deal with that Head/combo issue. BV

This is the type of cabinet that will allow you to take your Z-Plus or Cure simpleton, and slide it right in without flipping pancakes or faceplates.

So, Doc tends to shy away from them these days. Never say never, though I do recall Doc saying this about reverb in a head. So I took it upon myself to build my own head cab. I mounted the reverb tank at the bottom of the cabinet just below the preamp tubes. I did make the cab slightly taller. I built it about a year ago and have had no issues. How about a NR Z-Plus head? That's what I would have bought since I don't use reverb.

A Z-Plus NR head would be great. I would buy one.

I would also buy a Z-Plus NR head. There is something special to that amp in my view.

I, too, would greatly appreciate a potential Z-plus NR in a head configuration

Funny, I have 9 or so Z amps in head form and the Z-Plus was the only amp I wanted in a combo 😀

The lack of a head version provides some resistance to purchase, but it’s not a huge barrier. I have one other combo amp that I use regularly and it doesn’t tuin my day to use that.

An NR head version eh..... Well taken into consideration. The Parallel single ended design is VERY unique in its tone, you're all right about that. Maybe a NR head with a Metro Effects Loop, ( I love those loops if you haven't figured out yet ).

Sounds like a winner to me.

Does the tube in Mike's head (the one on his shoulders) ever go on Standby? It seems he is always thinking up a new amp or configuration.

I am not sure why you would want to put a Metro FX into the Z-Plus unless you are considering that a new unit would be built without that FX Loop tube.
The loop on my Z-Plus works well, but I just run a light delay through it.
I like the reverb on board with this amp.

I've got my new Z-Plus coming in from SW on Tuesday, but I would have bought a head in a heartbeat, had it been available.

I would buy a Z-Plus NR Head with the standard tube buffered Fx loop in a heartbeat.

How could you ever part with that delicious reverb?!?!?

I've got a couple really good reverb pedals, so I figured without the reverb in the circuit, the amp might sound even better. Truth is, I'd buy a Z-Plus head with or without the reverb.
Edit to add: Also , there's the curiosity factor. It's been talked about a lot in other threads, that the Maz18 no-reverb sounds different than the reverb model. It's been described as "punchier, more immediate" etc. So, since the Z-Plus and the Maz share the same preamp section, I've always wondered what the Z-Plus would sound like with out the reverb. Would the even order harmonics be more apparent ? Would the Z-Plus be effected in a similar way as the Maz 18NR ? Just curious.

You are right! The Z Plus is so good, I'm sure it would sound awesome even without the verb! For me, the reverb just works so well with it. It's really part of the sound.

Would the even order harmonics be more apparent ? Would the Z-Plus be effected in a similar way as the Maz 18NR ? Just curious. I like to use a clean boost with the Z-Plus, it gives me a punchier and more crisp tone, which is really a boosted front end. Which for me may be my way of obtaining the NR feel. Now that I write about it, I can definitely say that a clean boost is giving me the extra punch of a NR amp. So, I would say that if you pulled out the reverb circuit, then the results would definitely be noticeable. I bet that if you turn the reverb off and step on the bypass at equal volume, then that would give you an idea of what the amp would feel like as well without reverb. I would also bet that the harmonics might be a bit more prevalent, which is intriguing, but once again, I think a clean boost will get you there. For me, the magic of the Z-Plus is on the cleaner side with a touch of Reverb. I have also been using it with my acoustic with the same lower power settings. It really sounds nice with an acoustic! This is the perfect all-purpose grab and go combo amp but would be fine as a Head amp. As far as a Head version, there has been an empty Dr. Z head that has been passed around with the last holder being premiumplus (Dave) . That head was built by Mather and was constructed so the chassis could come out of a combo and go right into that cabinet without flipping faceplates. Really nice set up.

I would order the head version either way.
