I recently acquired a Strymon ElCapistan and it is a very good Echoplex sim. It is missing one thing however. The EP-3 preamp. I considered getting an Xotic EP to pair with it but I have heard that ClinchFX makes a much closer preamp reproduction. I have ordered one.
I have some thoughts/opinions on delays. I have two now on my board. I think a tape delay (and its preamp) should be before the dirt pedals. That is because all of the classic Echoplex sounds I remember were players driving the front end of amps with one. My AnalogMan delay, however, is the LAST thing in my chain where it does not clutter up the dirt pedals. So now I have either option.
I also now have the ability to run the two echos simultaneously with the delay times converging. I've wanted to do that since I saw Steve Morse demo it at a seminar. It's also an effect Hank Marvin used to use.
The ClinchFX preamp ships from Australia so no telling when it will arrive. I have ordered pedals from Japan and received them in about a week. Here's hoping it will be something similar.

The ClinchFX preamp has shipped. I did not mention that it is the "always on" version without a switch.

The ClinchFX PicoPre arrived a couple of days ago. Clinch FX claims that it is not just a booster and that it has the same "non-linear phase response" as the original Maestro EP-3 preamp. I think I know what that means but don't ask me to explain it. All I know is it sounds great with the ElCapistan. Better than an Xotic EP. I A/B'd them. The difference is not night and day so if you are using an EP I wouldn't rush to change. But if you are looking to buy an EP I would consider a Clinch preamp, especially if you are wanting to mate it with an Echoplex sim.
And hey, it's from Australia. That's kind of cool.

You have been quite experimental lately. Can you use that rig with your Violin?

The other really good one is the ChaseTone Secret Preamp. It's the one I use as 'always on'. I agree that these are a more realistic representation of the original than the EP Pre is. chasetone.com

I'm not ready for prime time yet.
