Ok I know that there has been several posts on speaker choice for the Z-28 and yours truly has even posted about how awesome the celestion alnico cream sounded in it. When I first got my z-28 it came with a Chinese greenback that to me sounded fizzy on the 3-3-3 setting so I replaced it with the alnico cream. I started to go back on to some of the older posts on the Z-28 about speaker choice and read several reports that the good Dr. Z said that the greenback was his choice speaker for the Z-28 and that it gave it a more rock and roll vibe. So I decided to give it another chance however, I sold my greenback. But then I ended up finding a new made in England greenback. I know there are many posts about if the Chinese and made in England greenbacks are different. I cannot say I have the answer to that question but, I can say this new greenback that was made in England sounds great out the box and there is no fizz on the 3-3-3 settings and I agree that the amp now sounds more rock and roll with the greenback. Before with the alnico cream it sounded real warm and vintage it didn’t have the highs and crispness of the greenback. It sounded good don’t get me wrong but it was a different kind of sound. I gigged the Z-28 today just straight in no effects just my strat and the amp and was able to actually crank the amp and get the full sound of that greenback which I would not have been able to do with the cream and Wow! What a sound! Speaker choice is a preference and we all need something different for our playing and gigging situations but I have to agree with the Doc the greenback rocks in the Z-28! Thanks Doc!

It cost me a lot of time and money over the years but the tubes and speakers the good Doc specs for his amps are usually the best choice.

The designer of an amp probably knows its characteristics best. Given that I like the 28 for its clean brown Fender Princeton\Deluxe vibe and don't play R&R, the GB isn't my speaker of choice. I've always wondered which speaker the Doc would have recommended for the non OD American voiced roots music Z-28 fans like me. If he has posted an opinion on this, I've missed it.

Currently I run it through three cabs for variety: - A 1x12 combo cab with a ceramic Weber 12F150
- A 2x12 cab with a V-30 (which probably won't last long) and an alnico Weber 12A150W
- A 2x12 cab with a Weber alnico California and an alnico Tone Tubby Red. I wired this cab so I could play either speaker individually or both in parallel.
I have also used an alnico Gold, Emi C-Rex and an Emi RW&B at times. I'm partial to the 2x12s because I like mixing speakers.

I think, correct me if I'm wrong, the Z28 1x12 combo either came stock with a Greemback or a G12H30 70th Anniversary. I prefer the latter. I WOULD like to hear a higher wattage Greenback type, like a 65 watt Scumback M75 thru the Z28. I did not like the standard stock Greenback in the Z28, probably because I dont like speaker distortion. Some do, I dont. I DO think British voiced speakers are the way to go with it; didnt love the Z12.

I agree that a G12 M-65 Creamback or the scumback would also be a great speaker for the Z-28. And probably even better then the greenback. I may eventually go that route. I think the higher powered greenback would still give it what the greenback gives it but with better bass and a little more headroom and less early breakup. I play single coils. Im a strat guy so its not that bad for me at the moment. I could see how playing a humbucker type of guitar would be tough with the greenback. The Z12 in the Z-Lux was perfect for that amp. I have had the G12H30 in a lot of other Z amps that I have had and sold its not a bad speaker at all. The G12M-65 creamback was excellent with the remedy. I had the G12H30 with the remedy as well then went to the Gold and finally ended up with the creamback.

A few years ago I purchased a brand new Z-28 head and a brand new Dr Z 1x12 speaker cabinet. I was looking for the tone of an "old brown series amp that had been upgraded." The shop was called before the purchase and Dr. Z had suggested that the Z 12 speaker would work well for me. I am happy to report that it has been a very good match for the Z-28 head. And, every bit as happy to report it sounds like an upgraded older amp to my ears.
