I love my Wreck with the Speed and Comfort option. So I didn't get the 1/2 power mod. The main reason is that I think that a Wreck on full power and a BL on two clicks is about the same loudness as a Wreck on 1/2 power. Using the BL gets me "less loud" when I need it without sacrificing the Speed or comfort decision. Notice I didn't use the word "quieter".
For those who have or had both, is my understanding close to being correct?

I believe you are basically correct. The first click of the Airbrake reduces volume by 3db - effectively cutting the volume in half according to a 2004 article in Guitar Player on the Airbrake ("3dB attenuation in the first position, and an additional 1.8dB for each further click). So the Wreck on the first click should basically be equivalent to the 1/2 power mod. Here's the article: drzamps.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/airbrake-review.pdfHere's another article that explains about increasing (decreasing) watts and resulting volume. geoffthegreygeek.com/amplifier-power/

I've got a Zwreck half power combo set to speed. I previously had a quantum silver set regular power with a an airbrake.
Volume wise two or three clicks is very close as far as loudness goes but the "feel" of the amp with half power is different. The half power switch gets the power tubes working more and the amp stays much more dynamic.
I'm currently thinking about having my Wreck switched back to full power just to get the comfort setting back or maybe switching to the comfort setting and keeping the half power.

In my experience (not with a Wreck), the db's of an amp on half power vs an attenuator knocked down to the same level don't sound or feel the same to me. Something about the amp putting out the lower signal vs killing the amp's signal between the amp and the speaker is just different to me. Better or worse is a judgement call and all up to personal taste.

I’ve always liked the sound of the Wreck heavily braked!!! Kinda compressed, real Voxy. But ..... then, I have brakes on my Voxes, too, so ........
hmmm
