I am looking for Clapton / Allman Layla tone....Don't want to give more $$$ to Fender......Talked to Jim @ Lil Dawg, he builds a great amp...the sound clips are dead On (using a Strat with a 12" speaker). All dressed out with an Alnico it's about $1,400 - YIKES !
Sooooo, back to shopping. Can anyone testify how close the Mini gets to Layla Women Tone ? I've already got a 1x12 cab loaded and ready....so the Mini Z head may be a good option if the tone is there. My other choice is a BF or SF Champ - Both of these can be had for $400 to $600 if you are not picky about cosmetics. However, I am concerned that my savings will be spent bringing it back to life (Caps, tubes, etc....) and once that's done...I'll kick myself for not getting the Lil Dawg Champster !!! .......my life is too complicated - HELP PLEASE - But getting that tone is nonnegotiable - it's Job 1. THANKS !!!

THANKS !!! I’ve owned a 5F1 and currently have a 2011 Mini Z combo. The tone of the Mini leans towards British whereas the Champ is more USA. The clean/light distortion tones will differ in that the Chanp will be warmer whereas the Mini will have more clarity and chime and if I may say, in spades; the Champ will fart out and the Mini will stay tighter when amps are pushed to their limits. The 10-12 inch speaker will be a better match for humbuckers but the Champs 8” speaker goes well with a Strat or Tele.

The Z-Plus would be your best bet but it'll end up in your "Yikes" price range.

I haven't owned a mini Z but I've played a couple. I don't think it's what you are looking for.
edited to add: Possibly a Z-28 (6V6s) head with the tone knobs past 3 o'clock, a low efficiency american voiced 8" or 10" speaker in an open back cab and an attenuator so it can be turned up. That's the closest I can think of in the Z camp. With the big OT, ef86, and two 6V6s, the 28 will never get as loose and snotty as a tweed Champ.

Yeah - I thought hard about the Z-Plus - I like the single ended sound of a 6V6....but it's too much amp overall for me - I'm looking at Silverface Champs, they are out there for $400 to $600 and several have Weber Alnicos - I think I'm heading in that direction.... Thanks for the advice.

I've got a couple of SF Champs, and a 1960 tweed Princeton. I've also got a Z-Plus, and while it's three times the price, it's way more than four times the amp! There's no comparison. They're all single ended 6V6 amps but only one's a Z. I never play my Fenders anymore...

I don't know your skill set but the 5F1 is probably the easiest amp to build yourself. I'm sure that there are several good quality kits available with clear instructions and support for the first time builder. I'm sure you could do it for well within your budget and might even have a good time in the process. Not much return on investment though. I've always wanted to build an amp just for the heck of it but unfortunately, all the ones I'd be interested in building for myself are the more complex circuits. I'm sure I could do it, but I'd rather buy a used Vicky or Clark and spend my time playing instead of breathing solder fumes.
