Just starting to test the waters on getting a Nova and wanted to get some input from you guys to wether you prefer a head and cabinet or combo. I like the versatility of a head but I also think a combo picks up some resonate frequencies that a head and cab doesn't catch. Any thoughts?

I love my UltraLight combo with the G12H30. I agree about the resonant frequencies in a combo...they sound more alive to me. Sorry, I've never played or heard a head/cab. But I hear that they work very well too.

I love my Maz Jr Combo. However, I still tend to grab my Ghia head more often. For our jams, I don't need to take a cabinet. When I do need to take a cabinet, my J Designs 1x12 is nice and lite-weight. When I take my Maz Jr, I always feel like I'm making an extra effort. It's the original and has a little weight. I keep thinking I'd use my Maz Jr more if I converted it to a head and the cab to a speaker cab.
The only other thing is if I was playing out more often, I'd probably take my Maz Jr combo and then stash the Ghia head as a back-up.
If I had to do it all over again, I probably wouldn't do it any differently. I really wanted a combo at the time I got into Z's. Now I want to convert it. I'm older and weight does weigh on me (pun intended). I'm probably not much help.

Mine is a head, but my Cure is (of course) a combo. I see the value in both. One thing the head format gives you is the ability to not only try different speakers (which you can still do with a combo) but try different cab types i.e. open, closed, ported, Thiele, multi-speaker, etc.
You really can't go wrong with either. Let us know if you decide to pick one up which way you went.

I used to be a head/cab guy because I'd had problems with tube-rattle in combos--not in Dr. Zs, but my Lonestar Special about drove me crazy. Also, I liked splitting up the weight, and I like the look of a head/cab a lot. But--there's also a lot to be said for just hauling the one piece--fewer trips is better when you're loading out at bar-thirty. So now I'm all combos. But would I buy another head/cab? Yes--depends what the deal is at this point. Most of my fave amp brands have either priced me out of the new retail market or are close to doing so, so at this point it's take what you can get on the used market for me.

I like both set ups alot at home or in the studio but when I gig, I love a light weight combo amp. Grab and go jam. I've never had a tube rattle issue with a Z amp (unless the tube was failing). Todd

I am a head and cab guy,BUT! I don't have any grab and go amps and I am thinking hard about the Nova. The combo only weighs 36 pounds. My ZLux head weighs 35 pounds! I prefer being able to mix and match heads and cabs, but have found myself wanting a combo. When I get the Nova, I am pretty sure I will be going with the combo. Everyone needs one killer sounding lightweight combo, right?

No fan. Unreal tone though. If you love tweed you'll flip over the Nova...

I’ve got a head and love it but I often wonder about the different nuances that would be present in a combo? Maybe I should ask the Good Doctor if a Combo cabinet could be purchased? Hmmm.

Welcome to the forum! Lotsa great guys/gals here with a TON of knowledge. I would bet you could buy a combo cab for your Nova from the Z factory. I use mine with a 1-12 cab. Love it!

Combo. You'll love it on the gig.
Tube rattle? Only a problem if you are on the internet or love unicorns.

Yes. Actually came in a day early. As luck would have it, we were playing every weekend but about time it came in we took a little time off so I've only played one gig with it but April will be pretty busy for us with some outside gigs so looking forward to seeing what it will do.

We'll, I've been on a journey. Since the head I acquired was red with a black Z on it, I went hunting for a red cabinet preferably with ZW grill. Found one at Humbucker and called about it and attempted to buy it not 5 minutes later. THANKS TO WHOEVER BEAT ME TO IT. Then I found a dealer that had one matched up with a red Therapy head and naturally he didn't want to separate them since anything but black is on the soon to be extinct list. Can't blame him for that. Humbucker still had 2 left. One with salt and pepper and the other one tan grill cloth. In the meantime I was trying to find out which speaker Doc recommended in a head/cab set up. I figured the same as the combo but wanted to make sure since Humbucker seemed to recommend the Cream back. I called them back to ask a couple of questions and before I could get my name on it someone picked it off. So I immediately snatched up the last one they had with the tan grill and it is now in transport to my crib with a Wednesday delivery date if the brown truck doesn't screw it up. I have an email in to the mother ship to see about a ZW grill but won't be the end of the world if I can't get one. So I have one of, if not the last available red 1x12 cab on the way and should be here before my next gig.
