Got my Maz18NR 1x12 back three weeks ago and have spent a lot of time dialing in different sounds with different guitars and can't believe what a difference and (in my opinion) better amp it is. I have always run my pedals straight into the front of the amp because they always sounded better that way. Today I went straight into the amp with just a cable and the amp sounded fantastic with no pedals coloring the sound. Then, I ran all the pedals through the effects loop in the back, Even the overdrives, and all the effects sounded better to my ear, much smoother and more balanced with no spikey peaks. It was almost as if there was a compressor in the signal chain. Since I play in cover bands, I need different effects, otherwise I wouldn't even use pedals because the Maz is just that good by itself. Has anybody else noticed an improvement and do you run your pedals thru the loop?. I know a lot of people say don't run dirt pedals thru the loop but to me they sound better. The only thing I notice when using the loop is a very very slight drop in volume but not enough to make a big difference.....has anybody else noticed this?

Couldn't agree more about how much the update improves the drive on the 18NR. Haven't touched the loop though. Is that part of the update?

I'm afraid I'm in the same camp as Chilly. I very rarely use the effects loop but you post may encourage me to try it. I've always gone with all effects into the front of the amp. I agree about the improvement to the amp's basic nature. I like to say it took a great amp and made it a legendary one.

Well, that means he must have had an extra triode in the design somewhere to drive the loop. Now I’m curious as well.

The buffered effects loop in the NOVA is not a vacuum tube one. It is a solid state sub assembly bought from another manufacturer. I wonder if this is being used in other amps such as the MK2 MAZ and for modifications. I have sent a question in to Z Repairs about this and should have an answer in a few days.

I like Doc's take on it--JIMI didn't have one.
