A while ago I picked up a more useful option for my needs with regards to amplification and considered moving my '28 along. This past Friday night I decided to retube it, rebias and play it. I found the old bias rather cold (@20ma) and stiff. Rebiasing closwr to the Doc's specs I found the tone to be like that of my first Z-28. I had an odd occurrence with the tubes and speaker. The Gold was humming after playing a low E. I had dampers on the power tubes and snugged up the preamp tubes. Still a hum so I checked the Gold. The bell was humming and if I held it, the tone stopped. I swapped to the neutral Jensen Neo. The hum seemed to stop. Saturday morning I fired the amp up again only to hear the hum again. It seems the power tubes are at fault. Rather than retube again I moved the two dampers per tube to different places to reduce the hum. Now the only noise is the preamp tube w a slight tingle in the background when playing. I'll get back into the amp later this week and put in different tubes, rebias and play through it. My point with this thread is I can't find another amp that sounds like this one, the Z-28 is it's own voice. Since Doc stopped producing them it's going to hang around until I don't. You know the universe wants you to keep it when no one buys it and the matching Z Best for $1300. It's also all white which is super cool since all my other amps are black.

It’s really hard to think about the market falling out for these, inspiring the good Doc to discontinue them. If I don’t play my 66 for a while, I forget a bit how magical it is. I can only imagine how great the 28 is. Also, it’s very hard to get them back after they’re gone.

Once I decided I wanted to own another one, I waited about two years until a used blonde head became available. I'll admit I wasn't looking real hard but they don't pop up too often, especially if you want a particular configuration or cosmetics. In the long run, it probably won't be the amp Doc is best known for (but it should be).
