I just tried one in my M12 a few weeks back. Sounds so good. Highly recommended. I pulled it from a buddy's amp to try it out, so I could not keep it.
I've been using the 5AR4 lately, doing the Steve Miller mod sort of thing. Did a little comparison of all three rec tubes and the 5V4 is the winner in my book. A little more drive like the 5AR4 but a tad more forgiving in the feel and a little more open/full in the bass (not too tight). Really does sit right between the 5y3 and the 5ar4, and to me gives the best of both to me. Really digging it.
Just bought a lot of 6 of them online. Don't need them all. Would be happy to send one out to fellow M12 guys. Created a listing in the BST in you are interested.
UPDATE: Clarification...These are NOS 5v4GA. Same tube as 5v4 or 5v4g, just a more ruggedized version.

What Rectifier tubes will work fine in the amp out of:
5Y3 (Works as it comes standard)
Will the following be safe?
5AR4 5U4

I’ve used them all successfully minus the 5u4. Doc lists an M12 mod using the 5ar4 here. Runs about 20 Watts if you just do a straight rectifier swap: ztalk.proboards.com/thread/68366/upgrades-stock-12Talks all about rectifiers in this video. 5u4 requires more amp but Doc states in the video that he over specs all his amps so they can run them.

"Might as well go to what the maximum rectifier needs and spec them everything to that"

All of this fired me up to try my 5U4 but it is too large to fit in the cabinet. Not sure its worth buying a different one just to try it out. I should probably put the 5U4 in my Route and be done with it.
Sag!

Bummer! Yeah, I was curious to see how that would sound. Let us know if you find one that fits.
That said...you could always pull the M12 from the cabinet, or put the M12 chassis into the taller Rt 66 Cabinet?!?

I am looking for more sag and not sure this tube would provide that.
My bet is the change will be minimal. Perhaps it would even be stiffer.

I think sag will be about the same as the 5y3. It may have more crucnh/dirt though due to the higher voltage it provides to begin with. If sag is what you are after, I’d say stick with the 5y3. Maybe even throw and compressor in front of the amp as an always on.

What a great video on rectifiers. I'm a new owner of a Z Plus. I have a NOS RCA 5v4. I'm taking from the video that it's perfectly safe to drop that in my Z Plus as a replacement for the stock 5AR4, correct?
I'm in no hurry, as I get to know the amp and really enjoy breaking it in. But down the road, I think I'd like to try the 5v4 in my Z Plus.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hey JMG. Reviving this thread. Sorry I missed this. You definitely could try the 5v4 in your Z plus. Would increases sag and bring the power down. Less headroom, quicker breakup.
