Looking to get a cab for my new-to-me Rx ES head and need a little help with determining what wattage I need to have. I know the specs for the amp list it at 45 watts, but my head tells me four cathode biased el84’s is closer to 35 watts. If I run the amp into distortion, am I safe with a speaker rated at 50 watts, or do I need to go with a higher wattage? I know there are 1x12 combos with Celestion Golds in them, so I’m thinking I’m probably safe with a 50 watt speaker, just want to hear what the wisdom of the board members have to say.
Thanks in advance. Lee

Welcome to the Forum Lee! A lot of good information and people here. I have one of the 1x12 Gold Combos that Doc made for Tracii Guns never had an issue and it sounds great. What speaker were you considering? You shouldn't have a problem with a 50 watt rated speaker.

I have a WGS HP Reaper that sounds pretty good with the amp attenuated a little. Just wondering if I am safe running that speaker in an external cab by itself without attenuation. Not that there are any places I could actually run the amp that loud!

I have never run it really loud but I saw/heard Tracii playing it at full power (ear protection necessary since he had 4 of them wired together!)

I have an RXJR, only 18 Watts but I run it through a Creamback 65, which is a higher power Greenback. The greenie is the stock speaker for the JR, so the Creamback would be the ceramic equivalent for the ES. I think it sounds great. Would be plenty speaker for the ES. Really balances out the huge lows and highs of the amp too. Bonus it’s rather low efficiency would allow you to push the amp a bit more.

Crazy Idea: Would mismatching the cab impedance lower the power being sent to the speaker?... giving a little extra cushion on the wattage?
Say your speaker is 8 ohms....could use the 4 Ohm tap for less power sent to the speaker. No? Or if 16, use the 8 Ohm tap.
Other option would be to contact WGS directly and see what they say. Most speaker ratings are pretty conservative from my experience. Celestion told me once that I should not sweat running my 65 watt Creamback with a 50 watt Marshall head.

That’s probably where I should have started, to be honest (contacting WGS). I have to say, this amp is a monster. There is absolutely no club I play in that will allow me to run this thing without an attenuator. All the same, I would like to the peace of mind in knowing I have a speaker capable of handling the amps full output, if need be.
Thanks for the replies, they are much appreciated! Lee

If it's a 45 watt amp you will be fine with any speaker rated at 45 watts and higher. Most speakers are rated conservatively. I ran an England made greenback in a 50 watt Mesa MK II for years without a problem and it was rated at 25 watts. No problem putting an 8 ohm speaker in the 4 ohm tap or 16 in the 8. It will cut down the power and volume a bit but not a bunch.

Man.... 50 Watt Weber Ceramic Grey Wolf... Lite Dope 8 ohm.... favorite speaker I've ever had with the RX ES and Jr over all...
With Weber's 50 Watt Silver bell Alnico a close second while knocking down the power a bit.... ALSO the Celestion Gold is NICE with these amps too. ANY higher powered (at least 50 watts) Green Back Style Speaker would work well.

Hey everyone, I’m new here also. I just purchased a used ES head and I’m trying to also figure out which speaker to use. I had a 2X12 combo years ago, and that sucker was LOUD! I’m wondering if the combination of the Airbrake, and something like a Celestion Blue would be feasible, or is the amp just too overpowered for that?

I have that speaker in a 1 x 12 sitting under my JMP. The Heritage series is noticeably different than the standard G12 65 M. It's really nice.

Old thread I know but you MUST try the alnico Cream with the RX. I just left a post on the RXJR forum. The Cream is everything good about the blue but smoother. Just barely takes that edge off the RX that can be real abrasive without losing the clarity, chime, and expressiveness that makes the RX so great. If you love an alnico vibe, ditch the gold. Go for the cream.
