Hi Everyone, Total Dr. Z. newbie here. Thanks in advance for all the great info I've already read! I've spent lots of time browsing around here. Just got a Remedy not to long ago and am absolutely in love with it. Of course one Z amp wasn't enough, so I just ordered the Antidote as well. I've looked around on the forum quite a bit and did some other research and thought I was set on getting an open back 2x12 with a Creamback and an H30. I then talked to the place I was ordering from and they suggested getting the Z best and that it sounds much better with the Antidote than an open back cab would. I know it's subjective, but I'd love to get anyone's input/opinions. I tend to play mostly rock stuff with a dirtier guitar sound. And most of the time I'd be playing at home, jamming with some friends, and possibly playing a few small gigs here and there. Thank you for any input!

I haven't tried the Antidote but I hear its wonderful. I have had a Remedy and that is a fantastic tone. Do you have anything to provide for a Christmas drawing, like say the Remedy? Just kidding

Welcome.....the ZBest Cab is not a small gig friendly cab, as it is designed for LONG THROW ability. The Dr. Z website has the Antidote paired with the 2x12 open back.

I totally agree, I've gigged my Antidote with the Z-Best. It is a glorious sounding cabinet, but it needs the bigger venue to realize the full potential of the design. It will sound great at home as well(because you're in front of it) but in a small venue you want the sound more dispersed. I like using a WGS Blackhawk in the open Z-convertible cabinet (the Z-12 is great as well and will save some $) or the 2x10 Z-convertible cabinet with the Z-10's. The 10's pack a great punch in the closed back mode of the cab, but are great open as well. Combine a 1x12 and the 2x10 for a great little stack. Lots of versatility in this setup. I have both. I'm a big fan of Doc's speakers. He's got a great ear as witnessed by his amps. I feel his speaker design holds true as well. You're gonna love the Antidote. Get a brakelite. It's powerful.

The Antidote with the Z-Best will tear your "front and center" audience's head off in a small to medium gig. Like Simpleton said, it throws a narrow beam of intense sound....big stages only for this cab. Might consider a 1 x 12 or the open back 2 x 12 with lower efficiency speakers (eg: Creamback or Greenback)....It will still be very loud!

I've never played an Antidote so I can't provide speaker recommendations but I'll give a +1 to the comments above that the Z-Best is not a "primarily at home and some small gigs" kind of cab.

Awesome...Thanks for the responses! Definitely leaning toward an open back. Does anyone have any experience with the older open back cabs vs the newer ones with the oval port? Is there really any noticeable difference?

With a Remedy and an Antidote I would lean to one of the convertible cabinets. If 2x12 is your desire, look at the back line. In either case you have the option of going closed back or open back. You can get the British wallop with the closed back cabinet if you choose. As for oval vs older, I can't speak to that

My two faves with the antidote and my current set up is a 4x10 for larger venues and the 1x12 for smaller. All open back and a clearsonic screen in the front of the speaker cabinet which allows me to run a bit hotter without tearing off heads in the front row and without overtaking the mix.
Cheers and Good Luck🎼🎸🤘
