I sorta wish GM would reproduce that old muscle car. It was Smokey and the Bandit in spades. I wish I could have kept that one too. So much fun but my left leg got pumped up from working that clutch! I bet it was over 20 pounds to depress that pedal, and no way I could drive it in Michigan snow. That thing's positraction rear end chriped the rear meats when I'd turn a right hand corner, it would be nuts on icy roads! GM won't. But these guys will! The drivers initial reaction is like twisting the throttle on a Ducati for the first time

It's here! I picked it up at GC and the store mgr. and I unboxed it. Brand new, unopened. Pulled it out and it's not a heavy one. The store staff stood around slack jawed, saying "That's a Les Paul!" I put it on my postage scale a few minutes ago and it's right at 9 lbs. I'll post some pictures later when I wear myself out playing it. But first impressions are that it's the most alive LP I've ever played. Full of harmonics and the overtones jump out as a chord rings down, I couldn't be happier. Pics to come...Plus, he got me $500 off the price. Thanks, Jeff!

Check out the tortoise shell fret markers. They don't look as red in person (they're a lot darker, the flash really lit them up) but I don't recall having these on my old one:

Nice! If I walked into a shop and saw that on the wall, it would be hard to not leave with it

ME Saw a video on the Custom Shop with Lonnie Mack doing the narration a while back and he mentioned the tortoise shell fret markers.

Dave, that’s a real winner! Love the finishing touches Gibson includes in the CS models like pearl inlays and the like. What do you think of the ‘68 custom buckers?

Sweet when you like, Gnarly when driven. I really like them. Very harmonic and rich sounding, I'd really like to find out what the specifications are for the magnet, wire, winding, etc. Put it this way, they're staying in the guitar. This particular one got it right and I'm not going to mess it up. If anyone's got info on the pickups please give me a heads-up. They're great.

I think I read somewhere they use A2s, which are my faves in a Les Paul. Not sure if the coils are balanced, wire gauge, mag strength, etc.

I got around 6.8k ohms in both pickups. Bear in mind that that's just measuring with the guitar cable plugged in with the controls all at 10. The controls are going to affect the measurement to a degree. I haven't yet opened up the back panel to see inside. It's really strange, I NEVER buy new equipment and have it for more than a few hours until I'm peeking under the hood. It's just that I love the guitar as is, so I haven't succumbed to temptation (yet)!
I had the second gig with it tonight, again straight into the Nova. I was mic'd up this time. It was awesome...I was getting compliments from a LOT of people about my tone. It's really spectacular. The sound man who is also a guitarist said that while he was doing sound for the show he had a hard time believing it was a Les Paul. It's got this harmonic chimyness to it that is really cool when both pickups are in use. When I kicked on the OD and went to the bridge pickup all doubt was removed!!!

I pulled the back cover plate and it's got the old Sprague black .02uF caps, and old style '50s wiring. Nicely hand wired. They didn't clean up the inside cavity very well before they sprayed the finish on it though. There is wood fuzz (for lack of a better word) around the sides of the control cavity. But the finish was sprayed on thick enough that no wood fibers will ever come loose. I thought about cleaning it up but there's no way I could do it without getting particles inside the pots and on the wipers. So I buttoned it up and left well enough alone. Aside from that small issue the fit and finish is terrific, especially the neck and frets. I got some Gibson finish restoration cream and gave it a nice rubdown. She's shining like a mirror now! I'll post some more pictures later. It's amazing how it plays and sounds though. It's as if this instrument is anointed, it just sings.

Third gig in, again straight into the Nova. That dang Nova with my Black Beauty or Sue's Firebird is heavenly. What a rush! I was getting compliments all night about my tone. I've never had so many people say that I sounded good...this is gettin' to my head!!!

My Custombuckers read 7.8k using the same measurement manner. I totally love them. I haven't had any reason to even pick up another guitar. I really think I'm done looking for guitars.
