Hello everyone, I am a recent Dr. Z convert after playing Kendrick amps for many years. I have been enjoying all the posts and thought I would ask for a little advice. I have a Z Wreck combo and although I love the sound without pedals, there are times when I need to use them as the places I play are small and volume is an issue. I have several different distortion pedals, but have never owned a delay pedal and one of the songs I am working requires a delay to play properly. I was wondering if I could get some opinions on the best delay and if the delay / reverb combo pedals would be the way to go since the Wreck doesn't have reverb - I don't really miss the reverb but it might be nice to have. I have never had a reverb pedal either as most the amps had reverb. I play classic rock, blues and the last several years have been playing more country than ever. Any recomendations would be appreciated! Thanks!

I love my Strymon Flint for Reverb/tremolo. The Nemesis delay and the Strymon El Capistan are both pretty good Delay pedals.

Really depends on 'how much' of a delay pedal you want. I've owned Timeline and Timefactor and sold both as they were just too much pedal for my needs. I rarely use delay but I have one on my board and it's a Boss DD-2 (I also have an early DD-3, basically the same thing). I like them because they are clearer to my ears and will cut through the band on stage. Analog delays are too dark for my taste.
Welcome to the forum.....let us know what you decide on!

I have the MXR Carbon Copy, which is another standard. Thinking about the El Capistan lately though.

I have 3 boards for use depending on what I get called for.
On one I use the MXR Carbon Copy, on another one I use a TC MiniFlashback, and on the third I use a Boss DD3.
I always keep a little delay on to thicken things up a bit, and these 3 can be pretty subtle, plus they can do the far out spacey stuff if that’s what you need.

Analog delays are too dark for my taste. Yep, they can be. However, a couple years back MXR came out with the Carbon Copy Bright. It has a brighter voicing and with the built-in modulation the repeats can have a vocal-like sound. I have both. In addition, I have the Carbon Copy Deluxe which has both pedals in the box. Best of both worlds. I think if I had to go back to one delay pedal...this would be it.

I am not delay guy. But I do like the delay section in the Analog Alien Rumble Seat. Works how I want a delay to work.

After watching some demo's it may be the perfect "in between" of a digital and analog in an easy to use box. Good recommendation!

I have a Boss DD-7 digital delay on my church board. I just bought a MXR Carbon Copy from DaveyK here on the forum for a new board I’m building.
I have Strymon Flint that I use for reverb and tremolo with my Ghia and Cure.
I like the tap tempo on the Boss delay. But I like the simplicity and warmth of the MXR delay.

Delays... to me, they are like fuzz pedals, love the sounds, but often find them difficult to incorporate into my playing style (or lack there of!). Currently I have an old Ibanez Digital Delay DDL (light green with 4 knobs), my oldest pedal, bought new. It does the digital delay thing... I also have a Boss DM-2w Waza Craft delay. It’s nice, does the analog thing. There is a MXR Reverb M300 which has a couple settings which incorporate a bit of delay into the reverb. Kinda nice. All work pretty well into to front of my Remedy (MV model). You have to be careful when setting up as I find a good sound at lower volume (guitar volume back) gets out of hand when cranked. The MXR M300 has a mix control I find invaluable in setting the modulation into the mix. I had a Boss RE 20. It was cool, but large. I found I wasn’t digging the reverb and needed a change... ME

Really depends on 'how much' of a delay pedal you want. And "how much" you want to spend, and "how much" your going to actually use it. delay pedals can get very pricey.

The flashbacks delay is very personal tons of fun. And for how much does the price is great.

I like the TC delays as well. I've got the Flashback X4 which is over the top for me...it does so much more than I need that I don't use it often. I find that the Flashback Mini gets the job done really well for me. The Toneprint thing is really cool, and if you just need a basic slapback or ambience type delay, it can't be beat for the size and price.

I've had a boat load of delay and reverb pedals. None are "better", just different. You mentioned a combination delay/reverb. That would be great if you could find one of each that you really liked combined in one pedal. For me I never have. I would like one side, but not the other. I'd suggest one of each. That's what has worked for me anyways. I have drawers of reverb and delay pedals. My current favorite delay is the Catlinbread Belle Epoch EP3. I like it because it's simple, but has all the adjustments I need to get it dialed in. The adjustment to control the overall volume of the mix level on one knob, and the volume of the first repeat on a second knob really works great to dial it in. Excels at slap back, great for extended ambient stuff too. It's a great pedal. Check out some youtubes. I haven't tried the larger deluxe model. For amp like spring reverb the Catlinbread Topanga is hard to beat. It's one of those things where if you ask 10 different people you'll likely get 10 different answers Enjoy the search!

I use the strymon timeline- It might be overkill for your needs. Especially the learning curve. Its got alot of settings- I mainly use it for some trails for solos- It sounds magnificent to me!

I’ve been on a delay journey and the two delays I’ve had multiple times are the Analogman ARDX20 (best analog delay that’s not $2k and made by Moog IMO) and the Timeline. I love the ARDX20 and really like the Timeline. I don’t find the Timeline to be as difficult to navigate as much as others. In fact, I feel like it’s largely intuitive and has just the right amount of depth for tweaking. If you like digital, like the idea of multiple delay engines, but don’t like tweaking, then I’d recommend the Nemesis. I liked it a lot, but I didn’t take the time to learn it. I sold my Timeline because I didn’t use more than a couple of patches. I don’t know that you’d need Reverb with the Timeline.

Thanks for all the input! I've got some research to do! Probably lean towards simple and inexpensive since I'm not sure how much I will use it.

Speaking of inexpensive the Joyo Analog Delay is a good bang for the buck. Around $33 new / $20 used. Pair it with a Joyo, Biyang, Mooer, reverb and you could still be under $100.

I've actually got an extra Eventide Timefactor that I'm selling. I ended up with two of them through some trade deals.
The sound quality is amazing on a Timefactor. I find that it's easy to dial-in an effect, due to the front-mounted knobs. It lets you do all the tweaking without going into menus. I also like that it allows you to store your own presets for instant recall in live situations. I've been using a Timefactor for about 6-7 years now, and I'm very pleased.

I've been very happy with my TC Alter Ego, which is a Flashback with one or two different settings created in cooperation with the (now closed) Pro Guitar Shop. In addition to a selection of useful "voices", it has TC's Toneprint feature, which allows you to download "designer" delays from a host of artists. I've got a Josh Smith one loaded currently.
I also have the Strymon El Cap, which is great, but I don't use delay that often in my gigging band so the small form factor of the TC tipped it for me. (Would have to go to a larger board to accommodate the El Cap and my other "necessary" pedals.)

I needed a 'mini' size delay so I just ordered a Mooer Repeater. I had the TC Mini FB but returned it as I found the Mix knob too sensitive, and it was the ONLY function that wasn't tweak-able via their app.

I really like the TC Electronics alter ego delay pedal but I have a mini pedalboard and I'm running out of space and I wanted to replace my terrible Moore delay and my uninspiring hall of fame Reverb with a single pedal that does both. I discovered the Nu X Atlantic Reverb and delay pedal and I love it! It's really easy to use it's got tap tempo, it's got three different kinds of delay and three different kinds of Reverb. And on the Reverb if you press on the Reverb button and hold it you get this Shimmer effect that's really cool! I think it's very well made and I paid about $140 for it but you get to very high quality pedals at that price :-) And for both functions gets about the size of a normal pedal on your pedalboard. And I really like the sound! I like the sound of the delays better than the TC and I like the sound of the Reverb better than the Hall of Fame Check out this video

Strymon El Capistan mines super glued to my board. Just kidding but it is the best imho. Me too! Funny story - I was working from home yesterday, and got a little play time in. And, finally figured out how the tap tempo feature works. It's been on my board for 5 years. So, yeah, there's that.

If a Boss DD-3 is good enough for Joe Walsh, it’s good enough for me.
