So I am considering replacing the speaker in my closed back 1x12 cab. Been running a 16 ohm G12m (chinese made) in it for about a year. I dig it. Aside from tone differences, I use it as a more portable and quieter alternative to my Blue/G12h cab with my RXJR and M12 heads.
I really like the green, but I am itching to try a Creamback 65. Also, I'd like to get an 8 ohm speaker in there, since my RXJR has only 4 and 8 taps. I've not had any trouble running them mismatched so far, but I just want to get an 8 ohm in there to put my OCD at rest.
So if I were absolutely going to replace it with an 8 ohm either way, which would be the preferred choice among the fellow Z brothers?
Not interested in other speakers. Just these two. I am well aware of all the spec differences, so don't want to hash through those. Just wanting to see what others think in terms of tone. Definitely leaning towards the Creamback 65. Any reason to not put the extra money out for that? Seems like it would be the same flavor, just better. A tad more low end and headroom.
Thoughts?

The Cream is higher powered, and that is the main reason to use it over the greenback. I use the CB with my Remedy and it sounds killer. I would probably blow the greenback up in the Remedy.

You will get a more full low end with the Creamback. I bought my 1st Greenback about 6 months ago after having the Creamback for about 3 years. After trying the Green with my Z28 and Maz 8, I sold it - I missed that fullness. Now 2 or 4 Greenbacks in a closed cab - 'nuther story.

Go with the creamback. If you get a higher powered amp, it will be all ready to go.

You may have found this already on the Celestion website. It does a good job comparing the two. (Here's the link to the full page: celestion.com/speakerworld/guitartech/2/175/The_Creamback_Story/). I've been messing with my Universal Audio Ox. The closed back 4x12 Greenback is my favorite sound. The 4x12 Creamback is my second favorite. I'll agree that they're different flavors of the same vibe. If you like one, chances you will like the other. (And the Greenback is probably #1 only because I'm slow to change. ) Here's the excerpt: A New Challenge: More Power, Same Tone
We’ve tried to build a higher power “vintage” speaker before, and with some success. The Vintage 30 was created in 1986 and while not having a truly vintage sound by today’s definition, has ultimately carved itself a place as one of the most unique-sounding and best-loved guitar speakers of all time. In 2011 we set ourselves a new Vintage challenge: build a speaker that delivers true vintage tone, with sonic characteristics as close to an original G12Mas possible, but with a level of power handling capable of keeping up with modern amplifiers and playing styles. Could we create a speaker using modern parts, designed to withstand greater power, but that genuinely sounds close to an original Greenback? The answer is yes, and comes in the shape of the G12M-65 Creamback. It has a hefty 65-watt power handling capability and an unmistakably Greenback-like tone. Does it sound identical to the G12M? No, they’re not 100% alike:that would be practically impossible to achieve! However, they certainly sound like they’re part of the same family, think of the G12M-65 Creamback as the Greenback’s big brother: same vintage vibe, but with the extra heft giving the speaker a bigger bottom end. No other speaker could sound as close to a G12M and offer this level of power handling capability.

From what I’ve gathered the g12m-65 is more like a high power 25 watt Chinese Greenback than the heritage 20 watter. But with a fuller low end. That’s great for me. Never played the heritage but like the Chinese reissue a lot and don’t mind the slightly higher efficiency.

Thanks for the info guys!
Pulled the trigger today on the Creamback 65 in 8 ohms. They were temporarily marked down 15% at musicians Friend and with today’s 17% coupon I paid a whopping $116 when all was said and done. Stoked!
They’re backordered until Dec 21 but hoping the brown truck Santa delivers it before Christmas.

Hey guys! Just wanted to follow up and say thanks. Absolutely thrilled with the Creamback 65. I do feel it’s a tad more “balanced” than the normal 25 w Greenback - which I love. Fuller bass and slightly less “woody” in the mids. Hard to describe but definitely in the M magnet family but feels slightly bigger and more open. Slightly lower efficiency makes it awesome for home use too. It’s just fantastic.
Have it in a closed back 1x12. Sort of a 18watt Marshall sized box. Love it with my M12 and RXJR heads. Great compliment to my open back 2x12 with the blue/g12h.

I wanted to mention I just prurchased and received my first new G12M 25w Greenback speaker from a online US dealer. On the Celestion box it was labled made in the UK and also the sticker on the speaker is labled made in the UK. I read online recently that they now again make the Greenbacks in the UK not China any longer. After this Greenback purchase it must be true.

Did not know that. I think my Maz Jr came with a "Made in the UK" Greenback. I think the one in my IsoCab is Chinese. Arguably, both speakers have treated me well.

Yes, I couldn't say because this is my first Greenback. Now that there being made in the UK again everyone will want and seek out the Chinese Greenbacks:).
