I like to submit a new amp to the gig environment as soon as I can after getting it, so I used the Nova last night at a new-to-us venue. I set the amp up at home to be running pretty clean. I used pedals and the amp's built-in OD and worked the guitar (Nash T with humbuckers) controls. Set up area was very narrow front to back. I ended up putting the amp up on the banquette behind me. I much prefer having the amp on the floor, but this worked OK. I could certainly hear myself very well The place was adamant that we had to keep the volume down. The master worked great for this. Management never came and asked us to turn down. (We have been invited back, and I think our compliance on volume was a point in our favor.) This is my first Z with the full-size ultra-lite cab. Sounds huge, and my back likes it too. Most importantly, I never felt I was fighting my rig to get tones I wanted for various songs. Never adjusted the amp, never tweaked a pedal. Still in the honeymoon period, but I think it will last quite a while.

I'm planning on using only one (if even needed).

Great review, thanks Mike. I'd like to hear where your settings were too. I've had my Nova out 3 times now and I've got the Volume at 11:00, Overdrive at 9:00, Treble at 1:30, Bass at 11:30-1:00, Presence at 1:00, and Master to suit. One thing I love about this amp is that I've always been a "pedal for OD" guy and now I use the Nova's natural Overdrive more than pedals.

My settings were V just about noon, OD 9:00 or a tad less, T about 1:30, B at 10:30, P at noon. Pretty close to Dave's settings.
I did use my OD pedals a lot, mainly because I've got them nicely dialed in for the songs we do. I used the amp OD a couple times on its own to kick up a solo and a couple times as part of a gain-stage stack. For the latter, the amp OD boosted an already-on pedal. (It could go the other way too, but that's what felt right in the moment.)
If we were playing mostly a straight blues set, I think the amp OD would likely suffice. But we're doing such a range these days that I feel I need multiple flavors of OD and OD with with eq alterations.
