I stumbled into a Guitar Center here in Portland, OR and they have a 4x10 Z28 in the used room. WOW!! I love that amp, I've only ever played a Maz18. The Dr Z I demoed that got me hooked was an 18 and I've owned two but this was totally different and I loved it. There was a Monza 1x12 there as well which would be a sick "2nd Channel" amp but the 28? Wooo, loved it! the girl at the front count came back and asked if I was having fun, I guess I was loud, hahahaha!! This may need to be my replacement Z.

Z-28 + 410 = plenty tone and plenty volume cheers always Joel Does the 4x10 set up allow for greater volume? I watched a Gearmandude demo when I got back to the hotel and he was using a tele (like what I played at GC) and our EQ/Volume appeared to be the same but his sound seemed to be breaking up where the 4/10 was clean and clear as a bell. Thoughts?

Re: gearmandude It could have been the speaker he was using. The '28 combo came with a Greenback which sounds more crunchy earlier than the Z 10s. My '28 is in a 2/10 combo set up and it's fabulous. Thick, chewy and stout with enough break up for my taste. Glad to hear you liked the amp. If you can work a deal I'd snag it. They aren't made anymore and will be harder to come by.

OKAY! So I have had 3 Z28's in every fashion you could imagine! Still my favorite Z amp! I have to say a head matched with your favorite speakers is what you will love!

There’s a 4x10 combo at Guitar Center for 1250. Is that a pretty good price for this amp? I’ve been contemplating a second amp and the z28 is high on my list.

It's been sitting there a while and they have only reduced it by $50. I would wait until it dropped a bit further (though you'd be taking a chance it could be sold at that price.) That is an early build btw (based on the gold faceplate). I have had one for 7 or so years - not going anywhere any time soon.

I don’t know about their history to know if any changes that may have been made. Or are you just suggesting that it might need some attention soon?

I really like the early ones - I have "several" vintage Z amps - but no gold fronts yet. That one looks to be a real keeper to me.

The word inferior doesn't exist in the world of Z, but the only change made was using a 12ax7 instead of a 5751. Doc goes over the Z28 in a few of his AMA's. Also, any used Z amp (depending on age or condition) should be retubed and some maintenance (DeOxit) depend on any sonic issues. All that said, if you have a strong back and play in venues where you can crank the amp - go for it!!

You'll be lucky to get a Z28 head for that price, much less a combo with four 10s! My only concern would be the size and weight. I'm still looking for a situation where I can dime my mini z LOL. I have a remedy and I've only been able to play it out twice and one time I was able to turn it up to about 12 o'clock dialed in with tons of overdrive, it was so glorious! I really like the tone of a Z28. I have the remedy and I have the mini z and if I were to get another Z... It would either be CG or Z28. If you can it all swing it... That's a great deal! Imo
