Just picked this amp up today. Maz 8 studio combo with 12 inch Celestion blue speaker and brake lite installed. Very impressed with it. Coolest part, is that I don’t even need the brake lite. Amp is definitely loud for 8 Watts, but I can turn it up without blowing the windows out. Great amp for practice and playing miked on stage. Takes pedals great.

Beautiful amp! Just curious, what’s the big black pedal on top of the Swart?

Beautiful amp! Just curious, what’s the big black pedal on top of the Swart? Tone King Ironman Mini. Serious attenuator.

This amp amazes me. Doc, I’m so happy I got my hands on this amp. Over the years, I’ve gone lower and lower in wattage, because I’ve learned that less is more. And when it comes to Dr Z amps, that’s definitely the case. 8 watts in the Z world is way more than anywhere else. I have had two Maz 18’s, one with Reverb and one without. I’ve also owned a Monza. All three were great amps, but not exactly what I was after. The Maz 8, while it shares a lot of tonal characteristics of the 18, is its own man. The crown jewel of the Maz 8 is the pentode/triode switch. In the triode mode, with the master cranked and the volume at 9 o’clock, you get amazing clean tones, and stomping on the EQ bypass pedal gives me the perfect amount of break up for live use. I truly believe this is going to be my go to amp for gigging. I’ve always had a sound in my head that I was after, and very rarely have I owned an amp that matched what I was hearing in my head, until now. Thanks Dr. Z!!!

Continually amazed by this amp. Absolutely love both of mine and will never part with them as long as I can play guitar. There’s never been anything like the 8.

Every Z amp I’ve owned has been red. Looks so darn good.

Love me some red, mine are either red or blonde. Only my Wreck and Z-Lux are black. Ricky, yours is a 2011, so if you're thinking about getting the revoicing and vastly improved Master Volume mod done, I highly recommend it. I almost sold my Maz 8 until I got the mod done and now it's one of my favorites. The new Master Volume is as good as the level control on the Cure is.

I considered it...I even emailed Don a few hours before I bought the amp. He gave me an estimate of $250 to upgrade it to the current specs/voicing. I’m really liking the amp as it is now, and I ordered the variable boost pedal, so I’ll play with that a bit, and then decide if sending it back to Z for the upgrades is something I need or not.

Lol I’m a bit in the same boat, but already have the variable boost. It’s hard to imagine the amp being “better”

This is my first post on here. Like the original poster, I just got my Maz 8 not long ago. Got it off of Reverb, but from forum member purpletele I think. I have done a few things to it like putting some NOS tubes in it in V1 and V3 and putting the G12-H30 speaker in it. I am starting to figure out the sweet spots on it and I'm really starting to dial in a sound that works for me. I play at home, but also in the live setting at church with a mic. Just some really sweet sounds I got yesterday and I am a mediocre player!
I like the H30 speaker, but keep hearing about the BLUE also. I would love to hear from some of you that have the BLUE speaker in this amp and what differences you hear with that speaker. I know it's hard to describe! I have watched videos, but many of those guys can make anything sound good! Thanks!

Looser bass. Less piercing treble. Breaks up nicely. Compresses as it gets pushed. I like the blue a lot, but my 18 currently has a creamback 65 watt medium magnet in it, and it sounds so good I'm going to sell the Blue locally.

I like the Blue a lot better with the Carmen Ghia (it's really good) than I do with the Maz 8. The Maz 8 needs (to my ear, at least) a tighter low end speaker. The Blue is a little too loose in the Maz. I have a Z-12 speaker in mine and it is wonderful.

One thing that really worked well for me, was putting in a NOS 5AR4 rectifier. Welcome to the forum. Good luck with your Maz 8. It's a great little amp.
