Had been considering a low wattage amp for gigging (we mic all our amps). Happen to find a Maz 8 today, comes with brake lite and Celestion blue. Never played one before (I have owned a couple Maz 18’s and a Monza). Would anyone compare it to the Monza? I liked it, but really couldn’t dial in a good tone with it. Anything I should be aware of?

Not as gain driven as the monza. I found it a bit more polite than my maz 18, but it can definitely rip. The blue is a perfect speaker for that amp. I did find that the maz 18 settings work decently as a base to tweak from for the 8 since it’s the same front end. Try the eq bypass for a tweedier vibe. Run the cut higher than normal that way. Same if you try it in triode mode.

I run the Bass control higher on my MAZ 8 than I did my MAZ 18. Other than that the setting are about the same. I run mine just on the verge of breakup. If you are oriented toward a Monza type amp the MAZ 8 may not be for you though.

Between the Pentode/Triode and the Tone Stack Bypass there are a lot of cool sounds in that amp. Mine gets tons of play at the studio.

Couldn’t dial in a sound that I liked. Got it in a trade, turned around and sold it about 2 or 3 months later. I’ve owned 2 Maz 18’s. The first one was an 18NR that I returned to the store in 3 days. I wanted a Dr Z amp, but at the time I wasn’t after the British flavor of the el84’s. The second one was with reverb, really liked it, but I had my eye on another amp, and had to sell the Maz to buy it. Regret letting go of that one. Want another one, but I really don’t need the volume, so I figure the 8 would be a good compromise.

Maybe try a 6V6 amplifier, with a very good master volume, like a Z Plus?

If you liked that MAZ 18 you will like the MAZ 8.

Agree with the above post except for one thing, if you like the 18 but bone need the decibels, you’ll LOVE the 8! Especially with the blue. Do it!
