Hi All,
After the amp gets hot it starts making this annoying noise. I put in new 5881 power tubes and a new tube in V1.
It sounds like somebody is quickly flipping a switch back and forth.
Interested in any thought you might have. I'm going to play around with it more tonight. I assume it is one of the older tubes going bad but I've never heard an amp make this kind of sound before.
Thanks!

You might want to record it and put it up here - much easier to diagnose if we can hear it.

The first thing that came to mind was "is your tremolo on," and "is V5 (the tremolo driver tube) ok".

Alas, the tremolo was off.
Recording it is a great idea. I'll do that tonight!
Thanks

Is there a cell phone within range? Dirty electricity? Florescent lights? I suspect a tube, always suspect a tube.

I must confess my cell phone was sitting on the amp.

Darn, I can't get it to do it again.
I have it at the same volume, same guitar, same pedal board, I even set my cell phone on it in the same position.
I have a new theory. Both places where it happened it was exceedingly hot. I mean blazing hot. Twilight at the Zoo and this guys un A/C'ed basement. The fan is working. Maybe it just got way too hot.
I don't know, it's a theory. I'll keep it running for a while and see what happens.

The cell phone thing tends to happen when the phone is looking for a tower so location has a lot to do with whether it does it or not. If your house is near a tower it may lock in quickly. Also if you have wifi at home and your phone uses it, as I understand it, some of what it is doing will go through the wifi rather than the tower making it less likely to happen.

And if you were in a basement the phone would have a hard time connecting to a tower anyway.

I am going to bet that is exactly what it was. I will test it in the same location this coming Tuesday.
God, what a relief! I have other amps but it just wouldn't be the same!!!!

"Z-Lux goes "dot dot dot dot dot dot......"
Sounds to me like you might have played a sextuplet.
(....sorry, couldn't help myself)

Three weeks ago I inadvertently placed my cell phone on my new Z-Plus that had arrived from CME. Similar sound after a short time of playing. After a few moments of "What the heck," I saw my cell lying on top of the amp. Back in the pocket went the phone, and the noise was never heard from again.

I keep my phone in my left front pocket, and when I sit the phone is about 3-4" from the control cavity of my guitar, usually a strat. And of course my guitar room is in the basement. Those noises can be a serious mind f*ck. Nothing better than gigging with ungrounded neon.

I'm going to have to try this phone-amp-basement thing when I get home today.

That is the sounds of your amp picking up and amplifying your cell phone. I think most of us have learned this through our own "What the hell is happening to my amp" cell phone experience! Once you learn this lesson, you never put your phone OR a wireless microphone receiver on your amp !

I turn my phone to airplane mode then set it on top of my speaker cab by my amp head so I can check the time at a glance but no interference from my phone searching for a signal.

Kind of a funny story.
A few years back, I got invited to a semi local show for an up-n-coming Country Star as one of his guitar players at the time was a Z user and a member of the forum. At any rate, I was asked to supply a couple amps. I brought my Maz 18 and my Super Reverb. My friend used the Maz and the other guy used the Super. Well they other guy wanted to plug a POD into the front end of the Super and set the POD on top of the amp. It was noisy as all get out. The amp was fine, but that POD must have picked up some interference, that and maybe bad house power. I think he ended up going direct with the POD. And of course the Maz rocked.
