Hello Lefty. I have seen the .pdf that is circulating with Dr Z's and all the different peoples settings for tones/pickups etc etc and have tried some with varying success. but I wanted to ask you personally. I have a "stock" 2006 Maz 18 w/reverb. I want a super crystal clean, super loud, tone setting with my High Sensitive Filtertrons in my new G6128 Players Edition Duo Jet without having to switch amps. I want a setting so my pedals do ALL the boosting and dirt if I want it. If I set the maz edge of breakup like I usually do, its too much compression when I do some gain stacking. I really love stacking gain pedals on certain occasions, but I have a hard time leaving my Maz at home and grabbing a Fender or something... I love it too much and it never failed me yet!.
So what do you think Lefty! Thanks

I'm sure Lefty will have suggestions, but I'll throw in don't forget the speaker. Switching to a more efficient speaker can have a dramatic effect on headroom (the voice of experience talking here!) I had a 1-10 Ghia with a Red Fang and I tried a Gold based on so many positive notes here on the forum. All of my clean headroom went away.....so back in went the RF. There was about a 5db difference as I recall in those 2 speakers.

So Z-Natic... I have the Celestion G12H30 in the Maz now and I think it was stock in 2006. What would you recommend for a more efficient speaker for more headroom? I have a Vintage 30 and some Greenbacks laying around the house, or are you talkng something else? RF? What makes a speaker "more efficient" for more clean headroon? Watts? dB rating? Trial and error? THANKS man!

Db rating. The g12h30 is a fairly efficient speaker at 100 db. You’d need to find something higher than that.

One guy told me after we both got done and he totally buried my maz with his randall something (good player though)...dave..."its only a 18 watt amp"...

So if I put a 12AT7 preamp tube in V1 what would that do? On top of that should I try a higher efficiency speaker, say something with 110dB rating? Suggestions on speaker? Dont get me wrong, I LOVE my Maz 18 the way it is, I am just trying to get it a little louder before it breaks up and cleaner for using pedals so I dont have to drag my AC30 or Twin around...

Probably sound a bit harsh. Most 12at7s don’t sound great for that use. A real 5751 has the same parameters as a 12ax7, but the lower gain of a 12at7 or thereabouts.
You’re also going to potentially lose some volume.

Try the 12at7 in the PI slot. I did that for a while. It didn't necessarily raise my clean headroom volume overall, but the onset of breakup was a lot slower and smoother.

I use to use just a rc boost on top of my maz verb...that gave me some extra oomph...

The thing is, the Maz has a terrific clean sound - but it will change to overdrive by nature as you turn up. Only you can say if it's loud enough for you at that point. As said above, there are plenty of ways to eke out a little more clean volume. Using the most efficient speaker you can get your hands on is probably the most effective method.
