Some years ago, I purchased 2 new Z convertible cabinets. Lately, I've been swapping speakers in and out of them and using a Radial cabbone so I can get a true sonic representation and side-by-side comparison of different speakers without being biased by different cabinets.
I'm here to tell you that I'm so jazzed by the sound of Doc's black Z12. The speaker even sounds amazing with any of my British voiced amps. Eminence did a wonderful job creating this speaker using Doc's specifications.
I have one in my Z-LUX and I now keep one full time in one of my convertibles underneath my Maz Jr.
If if you haven't already, check this speaker out, especially for your American voiced amps.

Have you ever A/B'd it against a greenback? I'd like to know the differences.

Hey John, I do have 2 Greenbacks (well, Blackbacks) that I purchased in the late 70s/early 80s that I have housed in an original Marshall 1966a cab (wood, not MDF). It would be unfair to compare that with a Z black in a Z convertible because of the cabinet differences, but I did have a Vintage 30 in one convertible and STILL like the Z 12 better. I may have a G12M Creamback coming that I can listen to in a convertible.

I've got the Z-12 in multiple cabs and amps. It never fails to sound great. There's something about the cone paper...

How tight is the LOW end?

|
Post by zpilot on Jul 31, 2018 20:12:08 GMT -7
It is as tight as any speaker I've heard in an open back cab. I have only played one in an open cab; not a sealed or Thiele ported cab so I don't know about those. It is not as big in the bottom as a G12H30, but it is at least as tight.

Another big plus is the price. They used to be $89. That was a year or so ago though, not sure how much they are today. But it's a huge bargain for a terrific speaker.

I could never get a good sound out of a G12H30 by itself. Or for that matter, a V30 by itself.
A Z12 by itself just shines.

Great speaker, right out of the box. I'm about to order another one, in fact.

I'd be curious of anyone's comments regarding how the Z-12" speaker matches with the MAZ Jr? I know it's an "American" style speaker and that the MAZ is "British" in nature (at least a large percentage), but sometimes great amp + great speaker = great tone, regardless.
Anyone try it?

I've got a Z-12 in one of the ISO cabs at the studio and everybody loves it. So you have to ask another question?

Another fan of the 12. Sounds great in the Z-Plus, and I like it over the Creamback with the Antidote.

Just got a new Z 1x12 cabinet from Humbucker Music yesterday. I got the cabinet with the Z-12" speaker.
I took it to band rehearsal last night and the speaker sounded great, with no break in. I'm looking forward to getting some hours on it, to hear the sound once it's broke in.

They do sound great right out of the box. They seem to me to break in slowly so the change is gradual. But then again, unless I put speakers on the variac all break-ins are slow as I don't usually get to pummel them with the amp.

With recent Cure Studio Combo purchase, and first time to hear it, the Z12 is a keeper.
