I recently replaced the G12 H30 in my Maz with a Blue and as an experiment, put the G12 H30 in my Z-Lux. It sounds great to me, hard to explain .....but just sweeter than the original, maybe more prescence. I am wondering if the speaker is too under powered for the amp when it is on the 40 watt setting. I never crank the amp full out but use boost and overdrive pedals to get my louder tones. I play Teles and play mostly country , classic rock and blues.

The G12H30 is rated to handle 30 watts RMS. The Z-Lux is rated at 40 watts RMS. It'll work for a while but realize that even though you don't crank your amp it will deliver peak outputs that will stress the speaker. In the same way that guys used to blow old 25 watt Celestions in 4x12 100 watt stacks (a lot of those old 100 watt heads routinely measure over 140 plus watts before clipping), you'll probably blow this speaker at some point. It's anybody's guess when.

Will I be OK if I leave it on the 20 W setting? The type of stuff I play is the same kind of stuff I would play on a deluxe reverb.

Dude....if you prefer the 40 watt setting (as I do), just play it on 40.....Replace it when it starts to sound ragged; my guess is you will get years out of it if you don't hammer it all the time....They're not THAT expensive....
But to answer your Q, it (the G12H-30) will go "forever" on the 20 watt Z-Lux setting....

Never had a speaker sound ragged on me unless it had a tear in the cone. I have blown speakers before and when they blow they have gone out like a burnt out lightbulb. My main concern is that it would blow on a gig and I would be left with a dead speaker . I carry a spare power amp as a back up but usually don't carry a spare speaker cabinet

My two cents is get a speaker that will handle the wattage the amp is rated for. That under rated speaker will work for awhile, but you don't want a speaker going out at a gig or wherever. YMMV.

Maybe even look into a Tone Tubby 40/40 Ceramic speaker, which can handle 40 W and would be fine in this situation. They're fantastic, just about as loud as a G12H-30, and in fact sound very much like a G12H-30 (arguably better, in my humble opinion). Either that, or try a WGS Reaper HP, which is a higher-powered G12H clone that handle up to 50 W.
I do get what you're saying about leaving it on the 20 W setting; but if it were me I'd be concerned about the eventuality of one day needing/wanting that full 40 W and then boom, you've blown a speaker. And yes, you'd know about it, but if somebody else is using your amp, etc. It would be like putting tires on your sports car that aren't rated for high speed--you'd probably be fine, until...

Thanks for all the replies. I have a two night gig this weekend, so Im going to try it on the 20 watt setting and see how it goes. I am taking a a backup just in case. Its a small club so I won't need the 40 watts. I will probably end up just putting the Z12 back in it. I just bought a Blue for my Maz 18 and I can't afford another speaker purchase right now.

I've seen 'em blow out all at once too, but if you're paying attention, most speakers (treated kindly) will lose their "edge" with time. They seem to lose their crispness and bloom after years. I think this is what you'd see playing the lux conservatively on the 40 watt setting.
But I now realize you're gigging, and that brings a new light. Here you DO have to plan for worst case scenario....
So to be safe and keep Murphy at bay, your left with using the Z Speaker (which I LOVE), or if you really love the G12H sound, saving yer nickels, and buying the higher rated (75 watt) G12H speaker: ($169 at MF)

Regarding the Blue , I did a lot of reading about it on this forum and there are a lot of guys using a blue in the Maz 18 and they all seem to think that it can handle it. In fact, Humbucker music offers the Blue as a $239.00 upgrade for the Maz when ordering from them.
