I have been lusting after the Z-Plus since its unveiling. So I took my Maz Jr 2x10 (boy I hated to do this) and a spare 2x10 cabinet to CME and traded them in on a Z-Plus. I was anxious all the way there, because my trusty Maz had been my workhorse since '04. I had given thought to sending it in for the voicing and other updates, but decided I could use the weight relief. They had a Maz v2 in stock, so I compared the v2 to the Z-Plus using both a 335 and a Nash tele off their floor. Z-Plus won. Can't wait to try my own guit-fiddles through this bad boy. Full size cab in blackout on its way. Now it's just a matter of waiting. Still I will miss my Maz it was so warm, tender, authoritative, lively and a dear friend. Mine had some extra magic.

Congrats on a great amp!
It's too bad you couldn't keep both Z's.

Congrats on a great amp! It's too bad you couldn't keep both Z's. I wish I could have kept the MAZ and acquired the Z-Plus. My MAZ seemed to have some serious mojo. When I played the Mk2 at CME against the Z-Plus I was pleasantly surprised by the difference. Still my '03 Maz IMHO sounded drastically better than the particular MK2 I played. I'm excited to unpack it, but I forwarded it to our temporary new home in Colorado. So I will have a new toy awaiting me when we arrive, but that is several days away. PS: moving is a PITA.

Funny you say that, can't verify it via a scale, but it seems the pants are falling off the waist.

Full size cab in blackout on its way. Now it's just a matter of waiting. Still I will miss my Maz it was so warm, tender, authoritative, lively and a dear friend. Mine had some extra magic. What exactly, made the Z-Plus win over the Maz v2? First let me say my time was very very limited. I may have spent 10 minutes on my comparison. I forgot to check the speaker on the Maz. The Z-Plus has the Z-12 which I find to be a great speaker. I dialed both amps tone controls to noon and played them. I found the Z-Plus to be rounder warmer and have a fuller sound. The Maz had an edge that wasn't present on the Z-Plus. Having said that, the Maz I traded in was so warm smooth and sweet I really didn't want to let it go. The reason I traded it was because it was a 2x10 combo and 60 some pounds. I have a 2x10 Z bottom with Z-10's (probably my fave combination). My tinnitus is bothersome, and especially trying to dial in natural amp breakup at home aggravates the issue. The Z-Plus 7 watt feature allows for great tone with a little hair at a very comfortable volume. Going to full power gives me plenty for larger needs. I will forever miss my particular Maz. It was special, it was new and with me since 04. I had rolled a preamp tube or two and put 6n14 power tubes in it. Could I have dialed the Maz v2 at the store into one of many places that I loved? Without a doubt, but I wanted a Z-Plus for the aforementioned reasons and it sounds great. I have a Ghia head for some EL84 flavor (though not the same as a Maz) and I have an Antidote for some authority and thick tones. The Maz I traded just seemed to give me the best trade in value, and it fit as the piece to part with for the situation I was in. I hope this answers your question. When the time comes and situations settle in my life, I envision myself with a Maz head for my 2x10 and 1x12 Z convertible cabs, but I am really pleased with my decision as I have 3 amps that I dare say can cover any situation I will ever find myself in.
