While the preamp tubes do not need to be matched - In fact V2 (cathode follower) should be a robust tube as the Dr recommends. He also recommends that the PI should be a Sovtek 12AX7LPS with matched halves.
I've never come across a reason to ignore his recommendations for tube specs (though I do use a new production Svetlana 12AX7 in V1.
I bought a pair of the 6n14n's from Perry and was so delighted with the improvement in sound that I ordered another pair with the same (cool) range.

Perry's tubes are the best. Great guy to deal with as well. It's cost me a lot of money to discover that Doc's recommendations for tubes should be followed to the letter, and he highly recommends PerryR. For clarity, over on the Z amp website, there is a Tube and Bias Info Page. Check it out and you'll see that for the Maz 18 phase inverter with or without reverb, (NR model V3, reverb model V5), he calls out a regular Sovtek 12AX7LPS, no mention of matched halves. V2 is a regular JJECC83 in the NR model, with a JJ 12AX7 in the reverb model's V2 spot. Just sayin'
