Recently I bought a Cure (my first z amp), and I'm absolutely loving it. It is just incredible amp. I've been thinking about trying to get something in addition that can do some voxy tones, but is also somewhat versatile.
Is there something other than the maz that Z makes that has more of a vox thing going on? The Maz 18 Jr NR, from the video demos I've seen and heard, seems like it would work for me, and it sounds so killer. So hard to tell from demos though and I have no where I can go play through one. I know it's a versatile amp but I'm thinking if I throw a blue in it, it will scratch the vox itch, plus a lot more. Does this sound right to those who own one?
One of the things I really love about the Cure is the level control. I play and record almost entirely at home and often after my kids have gone to sleep, so for me some sort of attenuator is a must. The level control sounds great, and now that I have it built into the amp the convenience is just so awesome to have. I'm wondering how the master volume on the Maz 18 is. From reading online it seems like some people say that you can use it to play at very quiet levels, but isn't it still just a master volume? Meaning won't different levels on the master volume have pretty big impact on the tone you're getting out of the amp? Like at high levels you'll get power tube saturation, etc.?
I guess what I'm asking is, will I still need/want an attenuator with a maz 18 mkii?
Thanks!

I would think that for the use you have described (At home) an attenuator would be helpful in getting some of the power tube grind.

I just bought Maz 18 Reverb MKII, and the new master volume behaves a lot like the Level on my Cure. I can get dirt with the volume between 10 and noon and the master keeps it down to home levels. (I’ve never figured out how to use attenuators.)
I’m still getting to know it, but the break in period reminds me a lot of the time I spent with my Cure last year.

I agree with what Stephen is saying about the MKII MV. It's very, very good. Note that you're not getting power tube saturation out of the Cure either; the Level control is very similar to the MKII Master Volume is. Doc really has it down on these.

If you are looking for Vox, look into the 30th Anniversary Mazerati - it was originally designed to replace Brad Paisley's AC30 so he would have better reliability. Also check out the Stangray and Prescriptions (both designed with Brad's Vox sound in mind). You may need an attenuator if you want to get dirt but they are amazing amps. Look in Doc's AMA to hear a demo of the new Mazerati. Limited edition of 30 made - $1,699 price point makes it a real bargain for a boutique amp!

Thanks for all the replies. I'll take a look at the Mazerati, Stangray, and Prescription. Still thinking about the maz mkii though!

There’s a reason why the Maz 18 is Dr Z’s best seller.

This may or may not help..I bought my Maz18 in 03 or 04. I had never really played a Vox, but love my Maz. However when we play a particular gig each year there is a vox AC present. I gravitate to that and feel totally at home. Similarly I find myself on the occasional GC trip to test drive on a vox amp. They come closest to replicating a Z. I prefer the Maz, but a vox will do in a pinch.

I have 3 Maz 18s, two reverbs and one NR. Mine are all pre-Mk.II revision units, although one only missed by about 20 serial numbers and all are post-2014 revisions. i've never tried a Mk. II version but I think the master is awfully good even on the older ones. I can't imagine that you couldn't sneak by without attenuation on a Mk. II model.
Everybody has an opinion, but mine is the the Maz 18 is one of two Z amps that is never a bad choice no matter what (the other being the Carmen Ghia.) Just no way to go wrong!

My opinion: Maz with a Blue will get you solidly into Vox territory, but will provide much more versatility and a MUCH higher build quality. You just can’t go wrong with it.

Also works well with a green back. I love my Maz. It can chime or be my little micro Marshall with an OCD in front. You can’t go wrong.
