Wrote the post about picking up a used M12 1x10 combo not too long ago and gosh I just love it so much. Well I'm out of town and brought my Amp with me to my grandparents so I could finally crank it for the first time in their garage. So I get it put and let it rip. Was great for 20 minutes when all of a sudden I get some crackling noise for a minute then no sound at all.
Read online that it could be the EF86 and that they are also really finicky. I do remember hearing some slight rattling in the amp when I tested it out at the store and pulled out both preamp tubes to give them a shake. The EF86 had a slight rattle in it when held up to the ear while the 12ax7 did not. Found my issue? Im out of town until Tuesday so cant do anything about it other than mope. I dont have much experience with tube maintence so sorry if Im extremely ignorant to all of this. Think its the EF86?

Definitely a tube issue. They always fail at the wrong time. Build up a cache of spares when you have some spare cash, you’ll be glad you did. If you were blasting away, I’d check the power tubes first.

No spares at all but followed the trouble shooting instructions other than the preamp tubes and nothing seemed out of whack. Guessing its just the EF86! Do have spares as mentioned...we have all been there...nothing like knowing it was just that funky tube...keep us informed!

The FIRST thing I do if buying a used amp is get new tubes. That way you start fresh. Keep the originals for spares. Doc's troubleshooting guide is the best way to check your amp. Tons of talented, informed great people here who will go out of their way to help you.

Oh and...clean the crap out of your inputs...really could be as simple as that and not the tubes...(tubes/v1 always is my culprit for crackity noise)...my nr 18 was making just horrible crackling...removed everything...chassis/tubes,ect...cleaned low input...doh!

Do have spares as mentioned...we have all been there...nothing like knowing it was just that funky tube...keep us informed! It has been my experience when the ef-86 blows, it will take the fuse with it. Ef86 are known to be finicky, are prone to rattling etc. Get some tube dampners from levey's. Follow doc's troubleshooting guide and you will probably find the culprit. Best of luck and let us know what you find.
