For as long as I can remember I've had an old Boss SD-1 overdrive kicking around in my ever expanding collection of pedals. I dig it out of the box every once in a while, play the beejeesus out of it, and then it winds up getting bumped off the board by some expensive boutique pedal or other. I must admit I have certain snobbery for some of the pedals I've aquired along the way, but there is something about that old SD-1 still has some magic. Maybe its just because I've had the thing so long now. Anyways, any love out there for the SD-1..?

I have an Analogman modded SD1 that I love. It got shelved a while back, but now that I've got an EMS in the stable I dug it back out. Great pedal made even better by Analogman!

For about 5 years (back in the '80's) all I had on my board (literally a "board") was an SD-1, a chorus and an analog delay. The SD-1 had replaced a Tube Screamer. I was perfectly happy with that set up and not even interested in trying anything else. Heck, there wasn't much else at the time.

So what does the Analogman modification consist of and what is the tone difference..? It takes away some of the mid-range and brings back a little more bass. Makes it a more neutral sounding pedal, which I find is great for mid-present amps like Z's. It's also modded for symmetrical and asymmetrical clipping, so it does the SD1 or TS9 thing at the flick of a switch.

+1 for the SD-1 AM mod. I had one for years and really liked it.

I have one. When it's rehearsal or a jam..that's all I take. Decent cheap pedal. Just throw it in the gig bag.
I honestly can't remember if I modded it or not. If I did, it would not be the AM mod...but the Do it yourself mod. It would have been 10 years ago if I did.
I had an OCD a while back and I A/B'd them against each other. They sounded so similar I sold the OCD. (Because it was worth more)

Funny you should bring that up, I just put it back on my board. This one's stock, but I have one that I modded from a kit by Monte Allums that's also great. It's got symmetrical/asymmetrical switching and a tone mod too. I still like the stock pedal, it's a great old classic.

I just actually played with a SD-1 today for the first time. It was my friend’s pedal and he had modded it. I don’t know exactly what mods he did, but it sounded like the bass was tighter and it sounded less compressed and more expressive than the stock one we compared it to. It also sounded great when stacked with the OCD (SD-1 pushing the OCD).

My stock MIJ SD-1 was my main overdrive thru most of the 90's...although I've moved on to other things I use more, I still have it, still sounds great, especially for roots-rock type gigs.
