I've read the threads and just wanted to put feelers out as there is one available locally. I play mostly clean stuff, jazz and surf, and my favorite Z is the Z-28. My main amps are brown and blonde era Fenders. Now that the Therapy has a few years under its belt and the honeymoon period is over, should I be considering this amp for clean with no pedals except a Flint or is the Z-28 going to give me 90% of what the Therapy will bring to the table? Just curious. Thanks.

I have both the Z28 and a therapy and I think they are a great duo. I run the ‘28 dirty and the therapy clean (usually the MV up high and the V to bring it to the necessary overall level while staying clean). I put KT77s in the therapy to provide a bit more clean headroom and “oomph” to the sound - love those.
I love the Z28 but it’s not the amp I would use for a pure clean tone if I had the choice because it growls so good.

I live outside the PDX area and I’ve seen that Red Head near Sea-Town.....
I miss my Therapy...the Cure is great but the Therapy was big sounding. Very full amp. Took pedals very well I thought. Speaker choice really seemed to matter with this amp for me and Dr Z recommendation of V30 led me to the WGS Retro. Some speakers seemed to decrease the EQ adjustability while others opened it up.

Apologies to those who like the red ones but red is probably my least favorite Z color. Call me superficial but I may wind up passing on it just because of the color. Still on the fence though so any more comments are appreciated.

I've had my Therapy for about a month now and I kick myself for not buying one when they first came out. I think the amp shines in the overdrive area, but it will serve you well in the clean department. It has great touch dynamics that are unlike anything I've ever owned. The Master Volume is also great and I think it's better than the Z Air Brake, at lest with this amp. I think it's great with the Celestion Vintage 30. I think it will remind you of those Brown and Blond amps and it will get you back to Tweed territory too. It will smooth out your Strats and Teles and rock your Les Paul.
Go for it! It's a very versatile amp.

I should add I have my therapy running through a 2x12 with a v30 and an h30 (the Z best configuration). I veneered the front of the cab to match the Harvey valence of my therapy (it’s my avatar).

I agree with Simpleton on color. I use to have the Henry Ford mentality "any color as long as it's black." Then I took a chance and picked up a red 2x10 used locally. Now the non-conformity appeals to me. My Antidote is Surf Green and I used to be bothered by the difference, but now I embrace it. Guy at church calls it my lime sherbert amp, but I just soak it up and smile gleefully. Looks great perched on top of the red cabinets. Very festive.

Still liking mine. I recently came into possession of a 2-10 convertible cabinet with Z speakers and I'm impressed with it and the Therapy together.

I'm still liking mine, it sounds great with a Gold, even better with KT77 tubes. And red can look pretty good...

I’m using gold as well but haven’t tried gold/Therapy in a live setting. Hopefully it will still sound great in the mix. I keep hearing about the KT77s with the Therapy. Since it’s time for new tubes maybe I’ll roll the dice and see what happens.

Any more comments about the Therapy's cleans or similarity\differences to the Z-28? Thanks for the responses (and pics) so far

Therapy does not have as quick of an attack as 28’. This is where the ef-86 makes a difference. Therapy also seems “thicker” in the mids. When I had a 28’ I ran it mostly 9-9-9 for the cleans. The cleans on the Thrapy can get pretty close to the 28’. The MV is nice and very helpful, no air brake needed for me. Bloom is much better on the Therapy.
It has been a while since I owned a 28’ and I would like to revisit it. But in my opinion Therapy>z28’ and I liked my 28’.

I just hooked mine up last night for the first time in a while. I have V30 loaded 2x12 that this amp just loves.
Great sounding amp, I am thinking about bringing it back up to church soon so I can play with my Zlux at home for a while.

I even have a couple of red guitars, Fiesta and Candy Dakota. I don't play out any more so it's not like anyone would ever see the red amp except me......and the red dog of course.

I decided to pass on the local red one but I may still wind up with a Therapy pretty soon from a totally unexpected source. Thanks to everyone who responded.

Thanks, and welcome to our little corner of the WWW. This group is full of special people with a great deal of knowledge, experience, and of course enthusiasm for Z amps. We like to compare Z amps to potato chips, ya cain't have just one!
