I took the stock 6n14n / EL84 out of my Maz 8 today. It's getting close to 2000 hours on it, so I wanted to see how it looks. It looks fine, and still sounds great. However, the silicone O ring tube dampers had gotten kinda hard, and one broke when I tried to move it. So rather than order some and wait for them to get shipped, I took a trip out to McMaster-Carr will call and picked up some of these: www.mcmaster.com/#1283N257They fit great and are rated up to 450 deg. F. So if you need EL84 size dampers, McMaster-Carr is a good source.

2000 hours! That tube should be in a museum. DA ! Russian tractor museum. I think Doc said somewhere in a thread or AMA that these 6n14n's are rated for 3000 hours. A few months ago I thought maybe it might be degrading slowly, and I haven't noticed it. So I swapped in one of the spares I got from Perry. Couldn't hear any difference, so I put the original back in.

Also, EL-84 types are so inexpensive that I don't normally run them more than 500 hours. I have a lot of time on the current power tube in MAZ 8. It's one of the 6n14n tubes perryr sells. However, the same tube that came originally in the amp failed pretty quickly. If we are only talking about 1 or 2 tubes I will still change them around 500 hours. That's sometime between a year or two.

I can see changing new production power tubes fairly regularly, but the 6n14n's Doc uses have a LOT of life left at 500 hrs. Unless you get unlucky, and get the occasional short lived one. Have you seen Doc's latest AMA ? I thought they were rated for 3000 hrs. More like 5000.

Yes I saw that, and I absolutely believe him. But my MAZ 8 uses ONE tube and I have 7 6n14n tubes and 3 matched quads of JJ's from about 2005 (when I think they were the best) AND a few other vintage EL-84's in my stash.
