With your DB4, which cab and speakers are you preferring? Combo or head and cab? Open or closed? 1x12? 2x12? 2x10? 4x12? Ceramic or Alnico? I’m considering experimenting a little bit with mine. I’m just wondering what other people are finding works for them. Thanks for your help, lads!

I have a few combinations that I really love with the DB4:
1x12 open back with Austin Speaker Works Alnico Elegante - This combo works for just about anything, rock, pop, blues, metal (with a pedal) 1x12 closed back with a Creamback M65 - This works great for hard rock 2x12 oval open back with ASW KTS70 and Crossroads - Works great for just about anything, too. Bottom end is a little looser in this cab.
In a perfect world, I think I would run the 2x12 oval open back with two Alnico Elegantes, and move the KTS70/Crossroads pair to a 2x12 backline convertible cab.

I just run my 1x12 combo with the Gold. Or if I want to change it up, through the Z Wreck 2x12 with a blue and gold.

A 1x12 closed back cab with a Fane F70 (ceramic). A very close second is a 1x12 w/Gold. Those two speakers work very nice together "in series" also...

Honestly, leaning towards the 1x12 creamback over the 2x10 Z’s. And it’s lighter! First impression is the 1x12 creamback is smoother, richer, slightly cleaner versus the louder, more punchier, and slightly darker taste of the 2x10. The 2x10 z’s seem to have a bigger bottom end though. Just my impression at low volumes.

I’ve been getting closer and closer to the clarity/top end that seemed to have been missing since picking up the Db4 and I can finally say that the Celestion Gold delivers what the previous speakers were lacking. So glad I decided to go for another speaker attempt as it really paid off.

So far, I like my DB4 with 2x12 Blue Alnico open back cab best. I found it less appealing with my 2x12 Greenback open back cab. I haven't tried it with my Creambacks yet, but I don't expect that to be better. I wasn't enamored of the sound through a single closed back v30 cab.
One of the things I like about the DB4/Blue Alnico combo is that with any guitar, there are 2 or 3 almost instant settings that are going to sound great- no matter what. The DB4 would probably be my "you can only use one" amp (if I was capable of doing that.) If I were only a humbucker guy, perhaps the v30 would be more viable, but I play single coils ~80% of the time, so I kind of depend on that sparkle and being surrounded by the sound of the open back cabs.

Would you mind sharing what your 3 instant settings are for the Db4? I would agree that the ideal cab is a 2x12 but some of us have old backs lol. The 2x10 was my least favorite though, maybe it would be different with two 10” golds. However, I am a Humbucker guy so a single coil guy might like the darker nature of the 2x10’s with this amp.

For a Tele, I usually have my rotary tone selector on 4 and the volume at 4,5 or 6. I set the cut control just to dial in the right amount of high end for the room. I just use my guitar volume to control the amount of dirt.

So, I typically run an attenuator. Most situations warrant being on the edge of breakup for each guitar. The great thing here is that we don’t have a lot of options with the tone selector, and that’s at 2, 3 or 4 for most things I do. I don’t cut the HF and I don’t have to be very loud to be heard (and still sound good.)
