I played one of the best sounding tweed deluxes that I have come across yesterday (A TV front 1950 5B3) and when I got home tried a 50's 5Y3 pull in the Cure.
It softened up the amp a bit and added slightly more saturation and slightly less volume. It also sounded fatter and in the vein of a tweed deluxe and the tone controls seemed less interactive. Anyone else tried a 5Y3?

I have not, but your report is interesting. I personally don't know enough about rectifier substitution. I have tried some preamp tube swapping that Doc said was okay to try, but in general I stay with the stock setup.
