I just bought a Z-Lux and WOW! it is great. But that's not why I'm here- My point is, the JAZ weighs 60 lbs., and the Z-Lux weighs 42, all according to drzamps.com. The cabinet is only 5 lbs lighter according to a source I just read, and the speaker is probably about 3 lbs lighter IF the JAZ speaker had a 50 oz. magnet. So where did the 10-13 lbs. go to in the Z-Luz? Is it lighter trannies or what? Dr. Z guys chime in here, if you can. That said, again, I LOVE this amp! I almost bought an EZG, but I found a Z-Lux near here. The amp sounds so BIG and loud and I have a feeling that the EZG is quite a bit bigger-sounding and louder, and it might be too much volume for my uses. Also, when I felt that 42 lbs as compared to some of the 65 to 67 pound amps I've had, I really liked that lighter weight when I think about carrying the amps up a staircase. Thanks, Brian

The cab on the early JAZ 20/40 was much heavier then the new Z Lux Ultra Lite cab. The JAZ was made out of Baltic Birch with dual wall front and an Oval decorative baffle over the grille.
It was close to 20 lbs heavier .

Thank you so much. I'm glad the trannies weren't lighter. Call me silly. I love this amp. I also love my M12. The only amp in creation that I choose to own other than these two is a Fender Vibrolux, so that may illustrate that I revere Z's. And I've tried many amps other than Z's.

Glad you’re enjoying the new Lux. As I always say, it is the pinnacle of guitar amplification.

Welcome to the Forum! A lot of good information and people here (including responses directly from Doc as you've already found out!) Z Lux is a great intro to Doc's amps. The M12 is no slouch either, just ask Steve Miller

Welcome to the Forum! A lot of good information and people here (including responses directly from Doc as you've already found out!) Z Lux is a great intro to Doc's amps. The M12 is no slouch either, just ask Steve Miller Ha ha, that's funny because I HAVE an M12 along with the Z-LUX. I wanted a slight Fender tone amp but with the clarity of a Dr. Z amp and I thought I'd buy an EZG. But I had a Z-LUX in the area and when I tried it, I realized that the EZG might be a bit too powerful for my needs. (the Z-LUX almost is . So I bought the Z-LUX. I'm really happy with Mike Z. He has been very respectful in returning emails I've written, and I appreciate the quality of what he builds. The M12 is wonderful. I'm just learning about the Z-LUX. It is BIG. Holy crap! I'm all about Celestion speakers, and not big on Eminence at all, so I put a Creamback in the Z-LUX. But I think maybe the Eminence actually does sound better for this amp. I also tried and G12H Heritage Greenback 55Hz. -a really nice speaker! But I think the Emi is better than the Heritage for this amp too-of course it's only 30 watts so I shouldn't really use it in the Z-LUX anyway, I'd say.

The Z-12 speaker that the amp ships with is a terrific speaker. I've tried several other speakers with my Z-Lux and the Z-12 always goes back in. Eminence got this one right, of course...Doc had his hand deep in the design of it!

Welcome, Brian.
For a while I owned both the JAZ and Z-Lux. Once I had the Z-Lux, the JAZ never went to a gig. I (reluctantly) let the JAZ go to a good home.

I tried a couple of high dollar speaker upgrades (a Fat Jimmy 1270 and a Jupiter 12LC), and the Z-12 went right back in. There's something special going on with the Z-Lux, its cabinet, and speaker combination. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

The Lux and Z12 are THE perfect combo. The only thing that beats that is a pair of Z12s - combo on top, cab on bottom.

I tried a Creamback in the Z-LUX, and I couldn't believe it, but I seem to prefer the Z12. And I may be buying a 2nd one since the Eminence is rather inexpensive. I'll first try a Celestion Creamback in an extension cab, and then a Celestion Heritage G12 55hz in a cab. I can't believe I wouldn't prefer one of the Celestions, but I have a feeling I won't, and I'll be buying the Z12. I love giving money to Dr. Z. It always turns out so well.

Doc has a great ear - it's amazing how many people switch to something else and then go back to Doc's original releases.
