I just put a NOS GE 5V4 in my Ghia and it got me thinking about the Z Plus. Anybody try this yet? I usually leave well enough alone but, after the results in my Ghia I'm thinking I will try a 5V4 in the Z Plus.

Lets get to ghia first(he,he)...what attributes are happening that make this something that you would want to pursue?

I run a 5V4 in my Ghia and to me it tightens up the low end and pushes it more to the Marshall camp. I've also used a 5AR4 in it and it does more of the same, I actually really liked the sound and feel, but I noticed it also burns up the output tubes a bit sooner, but not dramatically so. The 5V4 was a good compromise for me, since I like the firmer low end.

Lets get to ghia first(he,he)...what attributes are happening that make this something that you would want to pursue? In the Ghia, I read an old post from Doc on more Headroom for the Ghia (without switching amps..haha) he recommended the following: 1) NOS 5751 in V1, Nashville pickers trick acts like a low sense input. 2) JJ EL-84's bolder tone and response will add headroom. 3) NOS 5V4 rectifier, will add more plate voltage to increase wattage, but will still feel right. I never liked a 5AR4 in a Ghia, works great in a M-12 but not in a Ghia IMHO. DR.Z So That's what I've done in my Ghia! I also tried a 5751 in V2. 12AX7 in V1. I liked that set up too! I don't recommend a 5751 in V1 and V2, sounded to thin to me in the Ghia. Like Marc I like the bottom end this way. It feels a little more tight with a 5V4 IMHO. Maybe Doc or one of the tube experts will chime in here. Ron.

Good question, Kahuna. New here and I'm still in the early stages with my Z Plus. But I have some nice old glass I'd like to try in her eventually, including an RCA 5v4g. I love that rectifier for a little sag.
If anyone could chime in on if it's a safe swap, please do so. As I understand it, all Z amps are capable of handling this rec switch, but final confirmation would be great. In no hurry, but eventually I'd like to give it a try. : )
