I woke up this morning in a heavy mood and decided to warm my fingers up with some Alice in Chains riffs. DB4 with a good quality boost in front of it. What an amp!!! I think I want to get a backline 2x12 with two Creambacks for this type of riffage... Won't be able to keep these on the shelves now...

Sounded excellent Frank. What a pity the DB 4 has gone almost unnoticed . I have always said it doesn't sound like a typical EL 84 amp, and it loves Humbuckers.

Sounds fantastic. Nice playing. I love my DB4 as well. I just set the rotary tone knob to match the guitar and then the amp becomes a simple 2 knob amp. Works for country and rock equally well.

...it doesn't sound like a typical EL 84 amp... It does NOT sound like EL84's in there, that's fer damn sure. The only other amp that sounds as much to me NOT like EL84's is the original Rx. Amazing amp(s).

Z I'm constantly amazed at how much you can blast the front end of this amp without it backing down or turning to mush. Even with amp volume on 10. It just gets bigger, badder and bolder. I was using my Les Paul that has Doug Aldrich pickups in it, too. Those things have something like 17k resistance on the bridge pickup. Most other amps surrender pretty quickly.

That's the 5879 tube. Same one Les Paul himself picked for his Gibson GA-40 Les Paul signature amp.

It's closer to a Selmer Zodiac sonically with it's rotary tone control then it is to a GA 40. The GA 40 was Gibsons high rent answer to the Tweed Deluxe. The only thing similar is the input to the 5879, and how that Pentode tube handles Humbuckers. Z

I have to say, I owned a /13 with a dual 5879 preamp. The DB4 showed that amp the door!
If I had to compare the DB4 to anything, it would be a DC30 or a Chieftain. Considering what those amps cost, that is remarkable, but even if they were half the price, I'd still take the DB4.

DUUUDEE!!! That AiC and STP riffage was insane. THIS is exactly what nobody believed me about the DB4--it can do hard, HEAVY rock unlike any other EL84 amp. Love it!
I might've missed this, but what speakers were you going through there? [Edit: nevermind--I see now that it was a G12M-65 Creamback.]
Also, I hate you for executing all the best Jerry Cantrell riffs so perfectly...

Great stuff, Frank.
DB-4 and Z-Plus are in the front row of my music "closet" right now. Have been fine tuning the gig setup with the Z-Plus. Pretty much there, so back to DB-4 soon.

damn, if only I could get an 18-Watt-only DB4... I mean, 18 Dr. Z Watts are like about 45 "normal" Watts, so I'd never need that 38 W setting. (And call me weird, but it seems wasteful of me to be not using the extra tubes & transformer, etc.) Sigh... but it sounds so beastly.

I'm so close to buying another DB4 in a combo cab just to have it.

I knew it was a Db4 as soon as I read the title 😂😂😂 The way you talk about it makes me have second thoughts about mine.

Certainly doesn't sound like a bass guitar amp.

The DB4 has a half power switch on the back so you CAN have an 18 watt DB4. Add a Brake Lite to it and you have a very versatile amp that can handle any venue.

I'm just being weird about those extra 20 watts and extra 2 power tubes I really wouldn't need. Still though, nothing else quite sounds like that DB4. Shame that it didn't catch on.

Really love that TONE, Frank. Sounds like a sound track to a film of a 70 ton tank coming over a ridge and leveling it's guns at you. Heavy heaven, man. Thanks.
